in the exposition building by Chairman E D Coe of the state central committee The weather WHS unsufferably hot but when the fell the big auditorium was packed to the doors Chairman Coe immediately intro C A Lamoreaux of Ashland who had been chosen temporary chair man of the convention Mr Lamo reaux was greeted with cheers and addressed the convention Chairman claimed for the Republicans of the Badger State the credit of having first advocated the nomination of McKinley He said no truer or better Republicans are to be found than those who make up the party in for they are sound on the money question sound on the tariff and sound for William McKinley He charged the Democrat ic party with having brought about the present period of industrial distress by its mistaken policy of free trade The free had seized the to shout for free silver and to lay the blame for all this stagnation to a lack of free coinage of silver and scarcity of money The moment that any uncertainty arises as to a possi ble change in the monetary system of a country the volume of business is diminished credit is extended upon the best of security confidence is destroyed money is hoarded and general depression follows It is this contraction of confidence of credit which causes the tight money markets and panics not the lack ot money Ninetytwo per cent of the trade of this country is transacted upon credit instruments of one kind and another and actual money is in only eight per cent This constant agitation of the free silver question has ly added to the general alarm of the people and it has resulted in the con traction of credit But this condition of affairs has only been made possible by reason of the tearing down of the protective tariff and reciprocity system established by the Republican party The present demand for the free coin age of silver is but another Cheap Honey Scheme of which the world has seen many all of which huve ended as would this in disaster and The experience of ages has demonstrated that gold is Jie best of all metals for a money standard It is less liable to fluctuate in value It is found in quantities sufficient to satisfy t he demand It will last forever Nothing is lost in the process of re ducing and dividing and in short it is the one metal which seems to exactly meet the requirements Nearly every has at some time in the worlds history been used as money standard but nearly all have been found lacking in some important requisite and have given way to gold Why were free sil ver to happen gold would disappear from circulation at once would be stowed away in musty garrets damp vaults and cellars and buried under ground and we would have nothing to transact business with except a fluctuating depreciating silver cur r Ticy of which a dollar would be worth cents today and the Lord only knows what it would be worth tomorrow The history of this country alone should be sufficient to satisfy overy honest unbiased man that the gold standard is the only and sure one Since 1873 we have I lived and thrived under it and had it not been for the great misfortune which befell this country when the Democratic party was placed in power our revenues would have remained suf to meer fully every demand There would have been no occasion for e and UM i of would had which to and would hare made In to have at tracted the af anyone There would not him Coming MI I iron produc ing section of continued Mr no doubt that our people woold the free and un limited coinage of fenCO at some arbi trary ratio and would be about as much ia demand us there is in the demand of the free sil verites for the free coinage of silver at u 1 to 16 ratio The Republican party is ready to meet this crisis with the fortitude and patriotism which has ever characterized action in the past of the nomination for governor seemed plainly between the leaders in the race Major and Robert M Kol lette Bradfords chances living as good as neither of the lead ers wins At the conclusion Mr Lamo speech a call of districts was made for the names of those agreed iu the caucus of each district for membership upon the committees on permanent organization and resolutions The convention then adjourned until 3 p m The Afternoon Session was devoted to nominating speeches La Follette Elliott brook and Bradford were placed in nomination General Griffin was selected as permanent chairman of the convention His fairness and firm ness and his ability as a pre siding officer have captivated the dele gates and simplified the work of the largest nominating con vent ion
