i w a 515 MAKING IT HAPPEN bs in Our year Volume 92 No 44 Handwork Featured at Walters Home Wednesday October 28 1992 Ardis Walter spent 31 years as a school teacher and she and her husband Loren raised four daugh ters Ardis still found time for needle work including making quilts and crocheting Her home at 810 Pamela in Westview will highlight these during the Moravian Tour of Homes to be held Nov 27 and 28 Having made quilts for all her children and grandchildren Ardis says she will have to retrieve some of them for the duration of the tour The theme of this home is Ill be Home for Many of the decorations will be handmade Also featured will be family an tiques The dining room table will be set with pink depression glass and sheet music placemats will be used An unusual Christmas tree will be decorated with miniature quilt blocks Committee members include the four Walter daughters Sharon Pen field Connie Knapp Joyce Mc Coy and Shirley Gray The daughters took after their mother in creativity and their crafts will also be on display Other committee members also making contributions include Linda Witt Lois Van Zante Janet Dowd and Shari Witt Many learned music from McDonough McDonough Moravia left Saturday to spend the winter in Waco Texas Neighbors and friends entertained her at Bon Voyage parties and as they remi and contribution she has made to music in Moravia Verva Ritchison came here in 1948 to teach vocal music and the high school band She had graduated from Simpson College with 25 in her class Before com ing to Moravia she had taught mu sic in her home area of Greene County After coming to Moravia she married Ralph McDonough Her involvement with music didnt stop with the schools For many years Verva gave piano lessons and her many pupils still remember her telling them that music is something you use al ways and the discipline you gain from practice will stay with you all your In the Grace Methodist Church talent were in demand For many years she was choir leader Her musical abilities were also uti by the Moravia Garden Club of which she was a member After 44 years here Moravia has become a second home to Verva She says it is a generous commu and she is glad to see that the schools involvement in music hat continued and expended through the years Thank you Verva for the contribution you have made to the community with your music both in between Shelly Dommers baby and Susan Longs painted clown face Each will enjoy a meal at Cozy Inn Ruritan members provided the prizes for the childrens contest Winners were Kindergarten Keith Engle first grade Tasha Hatfield third grade Brandon Hatfield 4th contest was Jan Long Jan lived in Moravia for some time and has an active Moravia library card She contributes to the VFW cake walk and says she has a soft spot in her heart for Moravia Her pumpkin had a Halloween scene painted on its face For her artistic efforts Jan received a savings bond from Iowa Trust and Savings Bank Tammy Johnson Patrol Officer and Ilene Johnson of Drug and Alcohol Pre Moravia Woman Credited With Helping Save A Life Last weeks Kirksville Daily Express contained a front page story about nurses at the Laughlin Pavilion a psychiatric hospital saving a womans life One of the women involved in the rescue was Margaret Richardson of Moravia It seems that a suicidal woman called the Pavilion after consuming alcohol and taking pills She told the nurse on duty that she had taken enough pills to go to sleep and not wake up While one nurse kept her on the phone Margaret and another nurse were frantically calling the police and telephone company to trace the call After 30 minutes they were able to obtain an address The woman had stopped respond ing on the telephone about 30 sec before the police arrived so the officers broke into the house They were able to revive the patient and take her to USPS 362580 ThirtyFive Cents The way it was 65 years ago Oct 27 1927 Carl and Russell Alden are full The trousers were of navy blue corduroy and the waists were of blue jersey with a big M on the front They also had new blue and red sweat jackets Denny school Evelyn Hiatt teacher has 14 pupils Third graders Clair and Carl Hiatt had completed their third readers Foster school with Dorothea Darby teacher had 15 pupils At recess they played and Pupils at Enon school who re a grade of 90 or over were Burdell Mildred and Deena Roberts 55 years ago Oct Doyle Hampton ranked sixth in the nation in an FFA dairy judging contest held in Kansas City and the Moravia team with other members Ferrell Purvis and Junior Youngker representing Iowa ranked fourth in the nation in jersey judging At a Community Club meeting M K Blackman suggested that the town consider a dust relief problem for streets and city water which he thought not entirely out of reason or impossible 45 years ago Oct The show must go on despite the weather A heavy rain on the night of the New Hope school program kept the five Jacobs children who lived on a dirt road from partici pating until Don Pettibone took his rubber tired tractor and wagon to the home and brought them to the school In the meantime in reverse order the contests and auction of boxes was held before the program Af terwards the ladies served refresh ment of pie sandwiches and coffee Lula Tillmont was the teacher Beauty Shop provided permanents starting representa tive On the Republican side were Ted Clark for state senator Gkn John son for county board and Al Dukes for county recorder 35 years ago Oct 31 1957 School absenteeism was at a peak with 180 pupils out with the Asian Flu While Dayne Taylor was the only candidate for mayor there were plenty of candidates for five coun seats They were John Bai ley Carl Black Art Fox Carl Hi att Lee Hiatt Herschel Johnson O C Kaster Max McDonough Kenneth and Arthur Van Dorui vention Program will a parent education program written specifically for you parents of children who are receiving The program will high light the program what the children are learning and the at that are being formed This program will help enlighten parents with information about mixed messages we give off and how we can work together to insure that our children remain NON USERS The program is scheduled for Thursday November 12th at the Moravia Elementary School Lunchroom at Please plan to attend Hospital She had an eight year old son who was taken to the home of relatives Richardson said that the hospital nurses remained calm throughout the call but when the emergency was over there were tears of relief Although this was the first to re publicity such calls come in routinely One was even more difficult After a search in the Kirksville area it was finally traced to Memphis Tennessee Again the police were able to answer in time Mrs Richardson estimates that two or three crisis calls come in each week Margaret Richardson has been an LPN since 1963 and was one of the first to graduate from that pro gram She has been a registered nurse for 2 years A caring person she finds nursing rewarding even with the traumatic events that come her way
