memorable and suc event of the year for both current and former residents It is a celebration rich in tradition and steeped with history But the future of Fall Festival is in trouble real trouble according to Bev Wilson of the executive committee The head committee is com prised of five couples Each serves a five year term with one new couple being added each year as the chairing couple ro tates off the committee and each of the other couples move up one position Due to some un usual circumstances involving family and relocation tions the committee for the 1987 festival is down to two couples Greg and Bev Wilson move up to the top position and the only remaining couple Monte and Dana Albers assume the second slot Three more couples are ur gently needed as plans are al ready underway for the Septem ber event According to Wilson couples who have filled these positions are frequently young couples with small children but this need not be the case They would welcome older couples whose families are raised couples who have served in past year and newlywed couples as well It is a big com but not overwhelming as much of the work is delegated to others through the parade childrens parade exhibits and other committees During the off season meetings are held once a month with the next one planned for January A couples first year with the group is basically a learning year without heavy responsibility being placed on them The Fall Festival is also in need of someone to serve as treasurer This does not have to bea member of the executive committee Someone is needed as soon as possible to fill this position Another frequent problem of executive committee members as festival time approaches is baby sitter problems This would be a good opportunity for a single woman or a couple who would like to help but didnt feel they could serve on the committee Volunteering to watch children during work sessions would help a great deal Please give this some serious thought and talk it over with your spouse If you could vol to fill one of the three vacancies on the Fall Festival executive committee you would be insuring the immediate future of this tradition as well as doing something very worthwhile and personally rewarding for the community Then contact Greg and Bev Wilson at 7243340 or Monte and Dana Albers at 7249046 Quilts Do you have a youre Creek Was Soapy Austin Jay was a Moravia fin ancier and insurance man in the early He also wrote a historical account of this area which was furnished to us by Clara Hicks McCumber Greeley Colorado Included in the inform ation is the history of the nam ing of Soap Creek The city of Albany was about two miles north of the noted stream of Soap Creek The story is told as to why it was so named One of the earlier pio neer moving wagons had on the hind end of a covered wagon a keg of homemade soft soap In fording the stream which was deep at that time the keg of soap upset and spilled out in the stream and made the waters ever after soapy They were very effective in removing dirt and the original waters stirred around and produced a very fine lather The Indians of the Iowa region made an annual pil grimage to this creek to take a bath and even the cleanly housewives of that period knew of its cleansing qualities The little urchins of that time had many an unpleasant ablution in its waters The fanners would drive sheep for many miles around Albany to wash the fleece before shearing to remove the grease and dirt So soapy were the qualities that the sor ghum molasses manufacturers soon learned that it whitened and cleaned the cane juice so that it made clearer Editors note Indians kids wool and present day soap manufacturers should obtain the Jays account continues The industries which flourished here Albany area in the were squirrel turkey and deer hunting and running wolves with hounds distilling whiskey from corn and rye and certain kinds of wild fruits and counterfeiting It was a notorious fact that one of the worst dens of counterfeiters was located in a cave dug in one of the white oak hills nearby Of course I could also mention horse stealing but it seems that industry had its headquarters a few miles to the northwest in Monroe County Ed note Who has more information about counterfeiting and horse steal ing Jay also told how the lost of Albany was named It was said that the town was named Albany because the original settler there in 1842 had come from near Albany New York It was located on the northeast 80 acres in Appanoose County and across the road in Davis County This settler found plenty of wild turkey and squirrels in the white oak timber which then covered the country southwesterly to Unionville Iowa southeasterly to Drakesville and northwesterly to Moravia Please do not confuse that white oak timber with what you might see now being the second or third growth from the original white oak trees which were three to six feet in diameter and covered hundreds of acres Fire wood and fence rails and timbers for the log and a little later frame buildings came from these Many of the tall oak stumps that were standing in the suburbs of Albany in the early and later were six to eight feet tall and nearly six feet in diameter These were cut with the chopper standing on the deep snow which was said to have fallen in the winter of If vou can furnish a brief written history of each quilt and the seamstress it will be appre Anyone needing their dis plays to be picked up and taken to the community building for showing should at 7243754 prior to Saturday The has scat publicity to area iflg this shoo and a crowd is expected There will be Cou close supervision through out the insure the safety Please tour cuu
