Court Takes Up Sensational Shooting Case RARE OLD PAPER MONEY JURORS ENGAGED IN THE TRIAL Twenty-Six of the Venire Were Called to the Jury Box the essary Twelve Were Secured Craigo who is charged with assault with intent to commit murder on complaint of Dr R B Clark was placed on trial in the circuit court Wednesday The adjourned term to take up the case opened at 11 o'clock Wednesday and at 2 o'clock in the afternoon a jury that was satisfactory to both sides was secured Judge then pended the matter for an hour to give the attorneys a chance to prepare selves to proceed with the trial and the jurors were allowed an intermission to arrange for their absence from home for as a few days At o'clock the following jury was sworn in to pass judgment upon the evidence in the H L Babler Mt A M jury was not secured until all but six names iii the venire had been drawn Twenty-six men had been called to the jury box and aside from the number who were excused on account of ing an opinion in the case and after ing an acquaintance with either of the parties there struck by the flec state and three by the defense The men who were excused were David Albright H L Ball Sam Blum Win Dick John Duebendorfer Wm widdie John Gibbous G T Hodges Richard McGrath Gottlieb Ott J D Schindler Charles Warner Peter Ott and Peter Klassy I The defendant sat with his attorneys A S Douglas and P J Clawson of this city and M G Jeffries of ville at the end of a long table and at the other end of the table sat Dr R B Clark the complainant and his neys Burr W Jones of Madison and Colin W Wright of this city Both men took great interest in the drawing of the jury and each wholly ignored the other Each juror whose name was called was examined by Burr W Jones for the state He was assisted by the court who iu a number of instances asked if an opinion had been formed and an answer in the affirmative ended all further questions After the jury had been sworn in this afternoon Attorney Wright began the trial by making his opening remarks for the state to the jury The trial of the case promises a bitter legal contest and the attorneys will ex- ert every effort in their power in pre- each side of the case The affair is one iu which the public is already well informed but they know little of the inside facts that will less be offered to the jury by the de- A D Dessinger Has Some Specimens Used When Stearns Urns In suming management of the insurance agency Mr Stearns will continue to look lifter his live slock interests the firm has been without a down town office and the new headquarters will prove to be a great accommodation for the firm and those who deal with the stock men The agency is the same one thut was established by the late W W Wright who was the pioneer insurance man in this section of the state All of the leading and most substantial companies in the business were combined in this agency affording facilities for placing large lines of insurance under conditions most Attorney M G Jeffries who is the attorney on the side of the defense in the case of the state against Craigo be- gan to pour some hot stuff into the trail that is now in progress when he ad- dressed the jury late yesterday after- noon in his opening argument He gave to the public the first intimation the plan of defense that had been adopted by the attorneys for Craigo and as had been expected he introduced all sorts of foul talk and slanderous that are alleged to have come from lark at some time or other before and after the sensational climax that has brought Craigo before the bar of justice Wisconsin Editorial had a thrilling in Chicago Thursday While passing along a side street near Wabash avenue he was confronted by two men who a the point of pistols went through pockets for valuables sensational reports were put in circulation and the public eager to learn the particulars picked up every rumor and the case was discussed at length It turned out that there was very little to be known and the best of that was bad enough In the trial of the case it is suspected that reputations will not be spared and that there will be no mysteries in the domestic affairs of the principals in the case but what will be uncovered During the afternoon the court heard a motion for a new trial by Win Smith in the case of the state vs Benj Bucher who was convicted of the ceny of a watch at the October term The court overruled the motion and as the costs were heavy the state consented to a nominal fine and a fine of and costs was imposed Tho costs amounted to to city of Brodhead Mrs Susie If no other ground for action can be found he will charge the marble man with desecration of the cemetery Reynold's claims that it is all spite work He lived in Monroe three years and left and returned about a year ago Buss he claims wanted him to work up monument business here him but in- deliver himself up saying that he had shot Clark and Drs Loofbourow anc Confer who were examined the nature of Clark's injury The de- fense made no attempt to draw out any points in the testimony of these The state rested with tin testimony of the physicians and Craigo was next put on the stand He was examined re- garding the shooting very cleverly by Attorney Jones Attorney Jeffries con- ducted the direct examination and the testimony was in support of what was outlined by the attorney at the outset He strongly declared that all that had been claimed by his attorneys as being a part of the conversations that he had with Clark was fact The testimony of John Burns de ceased was offered by the state but excluded During the entire day the court room was crowded and the court's order to to deny admittance to those under 21 years of age is being rigidly enforced stead Reynolds went to work for Ryan This displeased Buss who set about to get his money for the ment purchased by Reynolds He sued the account in Lafayette county Reynolds did not deny the account and made no appearance He had just moved onto a farm and in buying an in- terest in the live stock machinery etc he not only made use of all his money but went into debt lie had written Buss a letter informing him of the promising to make a ment this winter if necessary or pay the full amount on May 1 Buss ever continued his suit and got ment to the amount of the purchase money Reynolds says his wife is still living and that the monument was for a ter IS years old who died While in the city ho ordered a stone just like the one that was removed of D C Ryan He says he will pay cash for this stone nit he intends to got even
