cussed by Prof J Frank Marsh of the Department of Free Schools FIRE AT SPRAGUE Destroyed Blacksmith Shop and Valuable Machinery Fire which was discovered ab out ten oclock on Saturday night which started in the blacksmith shop connected with the mines of the New River Company at completely destroyed that structure which was one of the best equipped of any similar establishment in this coal field the machinery destroyed includ ing a considerable quantity of new electrical equipment which was DISTRICT PRIMARY DETERMINED UPON BY THE SENATORIAL COMMITTEE ON YESTERDAY Names of Candidates For in each district and directed atten tion to the fact that while West Virginia has only about 50 district Virginia has about 150 Kentucky 100 Ohio 500 and Pennsylvania 900 while Maine has an annual average of 25000 high school graduates Referring cost of the contemplated building Mr Marsh showed thata ad equate for the purpose modern ly every detail could be constructed at a cost not ex the payment of which would be spread out over a quarter of century so that the annual addition to tickets would be so small as to be scarce ly and even that in crease be principally paid by those who had themselves re the benefits of the school vidual miners It was at first reported that it was the tipple which adjoins the burned building that was on fire but this report fortunately proved to be incorrect Had the tipple been destroyed the boiler house and power house would al so have been burned and it would have thrown a large number of men out of work until the struct ures could have The property was been rebuilt insured and will be rebuilt at once SAME OLD STORY A Freight Train and Hand Car Collide With Fatal A party of Italians on a hand way Ral railway ron the result car disputed the right of with a freight train on the eigh Southwestern Saturday afternoon the coming present gen leing that one of the Italians was instantly killed and another so badly injured that even should he recover he will be a cripple for life both legs having been crushed and a portion of his face torn away Several similar acci dents have taken place on this road within the past few months the chairman J Coon Pack of Mercer present the ab sentee W S formerly of Bluefield but resident of Calif given his proxy to Maj W B Honaker of Princeton The committee by a vote of to one decided that Mr moved from the state could not legally hold membership on the committee and consequently had no authori ty to issue a proxy The com then proceeded to fill the vacancy the vote standing two for J T Acres of Bluefield and one for Maj Honaker the chair man being entitled to a vote only in case of a tie As the commit tee now stands three of the mem bers are credited with favoring the candidacy of Dr Martin while one favors Mr Baker The action of the committee is embodied in the following call RY ELECTION FOR SEVENTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT BE IT RESOLVED By the Re publican Executive Committee of city of Beckley West Virgin ia at oclock p m on the day of July 1910 and tain and declare the result of said primary held as afore said and that the certificate of nomination be issued and certified in the manner required by law declaring the person receiving the greatest number of votes in said district for said office the re publican nominee to be voted for as aforesaid at said primary election to be held as aforesaid that a senatorial executive com for said district be elected as follows that is to say each county comprising said district shall elect a member of said com and that a chairman be elected by the entire district with a vote in case of a tie and that the election of said be certified to the said senatorial committee which shall on the day of July re sult of the election of said execu tive committee of said senatorial j district and that said commit tees term of office shall begin as soon as the result of said primary election as aforesaid shall be de clared announced and all prospective candidates for the United States senate be voted for at said prim ary election throughout the sev senatorial district and that the candidate nominated under and by virtue of this call for state senate be considered ted to vote for the candidate for the United States senate receiv ing the greatest number of votes throughout the entire district 11 this resolu tion be published and has othe ei In accordance with a call issued last week the city council met in special session last Saturday night for of taking action in regard to the disposal of the city improvement bonds the issue of which was ed last summer All of the members of the council were present with the exception of Mr Bumgardner who was out of the city The committee which has here had charge of the negotia tions for the sale of the bonds was relieved from further duty and Hon I C Prince was au to act as the representa tive of the council in conducting further negotiations Mr Prince left for Cincinnati on the following morning and on Monday to councilman Meadows thaU bonds had been sofd at par which is prob little better than could have been expected considering the fact that through an over sight in the ordinance the interest was made payable annually instead of semi annually as is the rule with mu bonds Mr Prince is to be congratulat ed upon the promptness with which he satisfactorily concluded the business entrusted to him and he is entitled to the full credit for the fact that the much needed street improvements may now be reasonably expected to be gotten under way with but little further delay Virginian Conductor Killed Joseph Daniels a freight con ductor on the Virginian Railway fell from a freight train at Clarks Gap and had both legs cut off below the knee The in jured man was brought to Mate ka where it was found that it would be necessary to take him from the train and give him im mediate surgical attention as it was feared that he would die from loss of blood before he could be conveyed to a hospital There he remained until noon when a reaction set in resulting in his death Daniels was riding the front end of a string of cars which was being shifted for a when a sudden application of the air brakes threw him in front of the train three cars passing over his limbs His home was at and he is survived by a wife jand three children ings with their
