McKean County Democrat (Newspaper) - August 30, 1928, Smethport, Pennsylvania COUNTY VOLUME 53 IHO SMETHPORT PA THURSDAY AUGUST 30 1928 PER YEAR No 35 LOCAL Delegation Visits Capitol For Paved Road to Simpson A procession ot over 50 motor conveying the Band and I nearly 300 citizens ot Smethport paid a visit to tho neighboring hustling oil towns Ormsby Simpson Davis and adjacent points Monday evening and were cordially greeted by a huge throng from the several communities which assembled at the spacious lawns surrounding the South Penn station at Gilford Favored by a night of rare beauty Hie gathering was perhaps the largest over assembled in the great nearby oil region The local mission was purely one neighborly good will as a compliment to the friendly relations Smethport has enjoyed with the residents of the nearby towns Incidentally the wealth of pleasure occasioned by the great gathering had a slight but very im- portant note of business vital to all towns concerned in bringing about a of sentiment for the early completion of the beautiful new highway recently finished from De- golia to Simpson on to Ormsby and the county seat The South Penn station was chosen for the gala gathering because of its central location and the fact that its well lighted lawn made it possible for the local band to render a concert i there I The band concert started at o'clock and the Smethport Concert Band rendered a lengthy program of specially chosen selections which caught the fancy of the crowd Whistling solos by P J Mundy a feature of the program The roadway near the bandstand was lined for a distance of a mile with parked autos which conveyed visitors from many points to the concert One prominent oil man remarked a band concert Is considered a real treat in these towns I'll have to hand it to you fellows for being a live bunch Dr W A Ostrander of Smethport made a few remarks in which he in- Guy B Mayo Esq prominent Smethport attorney who delivered a short but eloquent address The speaker cited the road building efforts of the Roman surfaced highways are still in heavy use In Europe the expansion Rome's power which re- Mr Mayo noted the interesting fact that following Rome's fall permanent j highways came in for little tion in a slowly moving civilization until the young nation of the new building them intensively with the result that the majority of cities and towns of this i far-flung nation are now linked with a j closely woven network of paved j ways which play an important part in maintaining our world supremacy Tracing the amazing development of our county highways from their muddy impassible condition a few years ago when it required a day to travel between points to the present era of paved roads by which it is possible to make the same journey in a matter of minutes the speaker em- the importance to county government paved roods to the county seat mean stressing the particular need of the Simpson road being ed to Ormsby and the county seat Following Mr Mayo's splendid ad- dress Dr Ostrander submitted a lution that the representatives of the several towns assembled adopt a lution to be sent to State Senator Frank E Baldwin and Assemblyman Thos B Wilson who were in burg with the McKean county com- at the very time to confer with Governor Fisher regarding the completion of the Simpson road to and Smethport urging them to exert every effort to secure a start on the highway work at the earliest possible The resolution was enthusiastically and unanimously carried During the evening the local citizens met and fraternized with our bors of the region and dentally were forcibly impressed with the splendid new highway and the beautiful region it traverses When completed its entire length the road will be one of the finest most beautiful routes in the entire county A wealth of good will resulted from the visit This outlook for the vitally needed completion ot the paved highway from I by and thence down the hill to port looks very encouraging at the present time It is hoped that the paving of this stretch of road which will complete one of the most important remaining highway links in county will be authorized in November so that j construction work can be carried out j next summer I Monday afternoon State Senator j Frank E Baldwin of Austin man Thos B Wilson ot Bradford ivean County Commissioners A J Bond of Bradford W H I and T F Hungiville of Smethport and I E A Studholme representing the Smethport Club went to Harrisburg and on Tuesday morning had a long conference with State Highway Commissioner Edwin S Stuart regarding this road ment j The McKean county delegation pre- j sented a strong argument to the j way commissioner impressing the urgency for the completion of this i route which link a number of j towns and a populous region of the great county oil with the county i seat The fact was cited that McKean j county was one of the first in t vania to adopt a road building gram bonding itself to the sum of 5750.000 to build paved roads erable of which were along routes which the state at a later date would have been compelled to at its own expense also the added fact that this county lias also ed dollar for dollar every year the stata road monies appropriated for roads in the county The fact was cited that Smethport are repeatedly summoned on emergency calls to the oil region and that hundreds of oil field workers constantly use the road Mr Stuart was visibly impressed by the facts presented and without pledging his department for any ture action stated that the remaining important McKean county highway link would receive fullest tion when the department's building program for 1929 is made up in ember The local delegation returned home Tuesday night feeling that real tangible progress has been made in the movement to secure needed im- provement of the Smethport Ormsby and Simpson road which is in able condition during the stormy months E A Studholme representative of the Smethport Club who at- tended the Harrisburg conference in- formed the Democrat yesterday that he is convinced that the Harrisburg visit will be productive of favorable and early action in this important highway matter BY DYNAMITE BLAST MYSTERY III GIRL'S DEATH JEf TT Stricken with illness while passing through Smethport on Wednesday j night of last week in a motor
