Verde Islands today in a southward tion and their destination is it is believed the fleet will attempt to intercept thie United States battleship Oregon and the gunboat Marietta off the coast of Brazil The ships in the Spanish squadron are the armored cruiser Viscaya which paid New York harbor a visit after the Maine was blown up Almirante Oquendo sP Cristobal Colon and Maria Teresa Three a Short Friends Are Elated The celebrated Piero case came to an end yesterday in Cleveland when the jury returned a verdict of not guilty The case was given to the jury at 10 oclock and the verdict was brought in shortly before 3 oclock in the afternoon At the opening of the court Thurs day morning Mr Dodge finished his argument and Judge Ricks started to charge the jury The charge was a short one and very fair With the con sent of the district attorney he direct ed that a verdict of not guilty should be returned as to the fourth sixth and seventh counts in the indictment be cause claimed on them by foe government These counts charged Mr Piero with having in his possession a number of periodical stamps which he to be stolen with having in his possession in September 897 of stamps which he knew to have been stolen and with having entered the postoffice with intent to steal The jury retired at This case has been a most remarka ble one in many respects and from the nature of the evidence produced at the preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner Folger in this city it was the general opinion that Piero was guilty and was also the head of a gang that had been cracking safes and committing robberies in this coun ty for some time past All remember the excitement that waa created when the news spread on Sunday morning the 20th of February that the postoffice had been robbed and in stamps secured also that a horse belonging to George Snyder and a buggy and harness the property of Perry Young had been stolen and that a rig answering the description of the one taken was seen going toward Can ton shortly after the time the postoffice was robbed driven by three men Then the horse was found between here and Canton and on Wednesday a a great sensation was Postoffice Inspector Owen searched law office and found the stamps that were supposed to have Been stolen from the postoffice Several suspects were arrested by the Canton police for complicity in the robbery but the evi dence was not sufficient to hold them FOR ELEVEN HOURS An Intoxicated Man Lay in Water Night Hiram Hering of Greensburg had a terrible experience last night and one that came near resulting fatally While under the of liquor he was going home last night and drove off of a culvert near Solomon Clays place two and onehalf miles north of town Part of his body was in the wa ter and
