Massillon Item (Newspaper) - October 9, 1897, Massillon, Ohio THD CITY VOL NO 43 O SATURDAY EVENING OCTOBER 9 1897 ONE CENT r A PORTABLE BRIDGE Miss Cisneros Used It in Es caping from 1rison EXCITEMENT IN HAVANA Orer the at Midnight of the Famous Prisoner Havana Oct escape of Sen orita Evangelina Cisneros from the Casa de has caused quite a sensation in Havana The investiga tion by the authorities has developed a number of additional facts in the case It is now asserted that the young woman escaped between 11 oclock and midnight of Wednesday over the roof of a neighboring house and through it to the street below OFarrell lane and not into the street where the police found a hand ladder On the roof of the adjoining bouse the authorities found three planks each about three feet long and 18 inches wide joined together by strong hinges so as to serve as a bridge en abling a person to pass from the roof of the prison to the roof of the house referred to The authorities also found on the roof a Smith fe Wesson revolver of large calibre its six cham bers loaded and a pew knotted rope which had evidently been used as a life line or guiding rope to enable the escaping prisoner to cross the plank bridge which had been extended by her accomplices from the house near the Casa de to the roof of that prison The revolver the knotted rope and the portable bridge as well as other discoveries made by the po lice show that the escape was careful ly planned She must have been in constant communication witb those who enabled her to escape from tbe Casa de where she was im prisoned with 11 other women The companions of the jroung Cuban whom she left behind say that the day before Senorita Cisneros es caped she received a package believed to have drugged candies In any case the senorita contrary to her usual custom did not at once distribute the candies to her prison companions but waited until Wednesday night when she urged each of them to par take of the confections The prisoners did so and they claim that the sweets were drugged for they soon after wards fell into a deep sleep and did not awaken throughout the night although the filing of the iron bar of the senoritas bedroom window must have caused enough noise to have awakened the prisoners under ordin ary circumstances There is a division of opinion as to whether the escape of the senorita was effected by Americans or by Cuban insurgents The police are hard at work investigating the escape and all the Spanish authorities along the coast have been communicated with in the belief that an attempt may be made to embark the senorita upon some vessel leaving for the United States Fernandez the jailer in charge of the Casa de and four em ployes of the government who were on duty there are confined in prison pend ing the result of the inquiry being made into the escape Gibson Protests His Innocence New York Oct C Gibson alias George A Sherin was arraigned in the chief expert of the de fense Judge Chetlain was called to the stand to add the finishing touch to the impeachment of Alary Siemmering When this woman was first arrested she told Judge Chetlain she had not been mistreated at the police station and that she hud jone to the East Chicago avenue police station and was return there as she knew she would soon be dis charged because she had done nothing wrong to this state of facts Judge Chetlain dismissed the petition and the woman returned to the police station This evidence demolished the story of Mary Siemmering who testi fied that she was subjected to indigni ties at the hands of police officials A sensation was created when a woman attired in mourning ascended the witness stand and was sworn The woman was Mrs Wilhelmina Miller a sister of Mrs Luetgert So firmly im pressed is she that Mrs Luetgert is dead that she some weeks ago donned mourning in memory of her sister Mrs Miller asserted that no mother was ever more kind to her children Fred Miller nephew of Luetgert and Diedrich Bicknese a brother of Mrs Luetgert testified to the kind ness of Mrs Luetgert to her children This evidence was called out to im peach the
