Today Sticks for the 19Ceut Kate but Minor Leaders Favor 64 Cents Pending Arbitration T Pittsburg Sept 2 Pittsburg coal operators meet the national executive board of the United Mine Workers of America at S oclock this O A conference will be heid and it is very probable that the big strike will be settled not however umil miners of the Pittsburg district have a say This in brief is the situ ation and hopes are high that a settle ment will follow the conference It may be prevented though by one side or the other failing to make concessions that seem to be in sight W P Bonney who represents the Scott interest G W U A Andrews and J C Dysart all boarded the train last night for Colum bus None of them would say anything for publication except Mr Dysart He said The miners have asked to confer with us and we are gc ing to Columbus for that purpose That is all I can It is expected that several of Cleveland will also be in Columbus in the morn ing miners officials think fa of the proposition submitted by Young on behalf of the Sen ator Hanna interests is very evident A private message from District Pres ident Dolan last night that he was in favor of standing the 69cent rate pending arbitration If the exec board decided otherwise he said he would not agree to it unless his con were consulted From one of the operators it was learned last night that some of the local officials of the miners are in favor of accepting the proposition and it is almost certain that a convention will be called Wheth er the miners of the district will agree the compromise is another question Just now they are much elated over the large attendance at their mass meet ings and the firmness exhibited by the men Many are of the opinion that taey can win out by holding on a short time longer as the operators must have coal for the lake trade The operators are anxious to start and if a settlement is not reached at Columbus it is known that they will resume with imported I to have the right to operate my own property as I see he said l The efforts of the officials of the min ers contrary notwithstanding This is a right I have and the lag of the land will protect me There is no that if a settlement is not reached the operators can get enough men in a few days to operate their mines which they will surely do The operators have never abated in their efforts to start the mines and will no doubt have them running in a short A big mass meeting was held at Fin today It is estimated that there were several thousand people present Many women were in the audience The object of the meeting was to influence the Snowden and Gas tonville miners of the Pittsburg Chi cago Gas Coal who have been noti fied that they must leave the company houses or go to work The miners claim there MATCH First Second of flour WEST VIRGINIA MINERS Somewhat Nervous at the Rumored Terms of Settlement Wheeling W Sept news that a settlement of the strike of the coal miners in the Pittsburg dis is near at hand has thrown a damper upon the leaters in West Vir ginia for it in part at least bears out the prophesy made by the operators to their men before the strike became ef in this state that as soon as the Ohio and Pennsylvania got ready to settle they would do so with ut consulting Virginia min who came out purely through sym pathy and with no formulated demand for better conditions However they are disincline to believe they arc going to be deserted and will wait for posi tive information before taking action The strike in West Virginia is really in hotter shape now than at any pre vious time are being gained daily in all the fields and the camps are growing nicely Already the spirit of fne St convention is labor lenders They were about the newspaper offices last night seeking information and this morning several leaders of local unions express ed themselves favorable to sending delegates to the Chicago meeting The Strike to Knd Unless some unforseen thing enters the contest the strike of the miners is pretty near its end As the scheme of settlement is outlined the strikers will make some gains What more may be added to the schedule when the details are arranged or before the firal clos ing of arbitration is not foreshadowed but the miners will be better off than before the strike If the pressure uniformity of manner in conducting is then kept up the final result will be the material better ing of the trade and of the condition of the workers employed by the coal com panies If the strike ends now as seems pretty certain it will be the queerest strike ever known in the if not in the country The number of men involved ranks it with the great strike while the methods of carrying iton near the danger line most of the time yet never crossing it are unique No doubt on bo h sides things were done that would not be done were deliberation Nevertheless except for the employ ment of officers tn guard against out break the law was calh d upon to take active part in but a perfunctory way No acts of serious violence character the strike from the beginning and with the example that has been set of carrying on a great while keeping within the bounds of the law it is possible that a new and peaceable era in labor warfare has been reached The benefits to flow from the solu tion of the strike will be oJ magnitude and as important to the community as to the men concerned for on coal de pends the operation of the mills and factories now so generally at work The happy outcome which now seems quite certain is the cause for lations all Times A CRAZY SERVANT Threw Rat Poison in the Well and Three are Dead as a Result Louisville Sept special from says Thirteen members of the family and people liv ing on the farm of Henry Miller near Metropolis were poisoned yester day and three are dead The suffer ings of the other victims are said to be terrible to witness It is thought that at least eight of them will die The names of none of the victims are given A hired girl who is insane threw a package of rat poison in the well Her name could not be learned but she has been arrested Appointed a Woman Sept Judge Dean today made an in the matter of the appointment of a member of the board of county school examiners by naming Mrs Elizabeth N Carruthers to succeed Prof E B Cox superin tendant of school She is the first woman in the state to be thus hon ored She also claims the additional honor of being the first woman to be come a member of the Xenia school board and holds the office of treasurer in that body LOVESICK GIRL Jumps Fifty Feet Into the Iliver From the Bridge Waterville Sept Day 16 years old jumped from the bridge into the river a drop of 50 feet she was angry with her sweet heart Two women saw her and immediately gave the alarm Men rushed to the spot and got a boat hastily and put out after what they supposed would be a lifeless body They found the girl alive but unconscious and an examin ation disclosed that she had escaped judicial dis including Mahoning Trumbull and Portage counties met here and is sued a call for a judical convention at Warren Sept 21 to nominate a suc cessor to Judge whose pres ent term expires this fall It was also decided by the committee to have mass conventions at the county seats of the counties represented Saturday Sept IS to elect delegates to the convention As both Trumbul and Mahoning
