since a million budget shortfall forced the merger bet ween the old Boston State College and UMB in 1981 Today UMB may face a million budget reduction in the wake of a million state shortfall which will result in cutbacks in faculty students and academic services and programs In a memorandum addressed to UMB Chancellor Robert A Corrigan Chancellor of Joseph Duffey and Chancellar of Leonard Laster the president of the UMass system David C Knapp spoke of the budget cuts The let ter dated May 31 was intended for distribution within The letter cites hiring freeze a temporary moratorium on all salary and wage increases and reductions in academic programs elimination of courses and class sections and limitations in counseling and support Also targeted are the community and public service activities which each campus provides and reductions in expenditures The letter also states that enrollment limitations will be necessary to reflect projected budget THE IMPACT ON ENROLL MENT The June edition of the Boston Herald quoted the Chancellor of the Board of Regents of Higher Education Franklyn G Jenifer as spying UMB may have to cut its enrollment next year by students Terry Zoulas spokesman for the regents confirmed this number with The Mass Media but he also said the Herald article misrepresented what the chancellor meant by the figure A large number of course sections may have to be said Zoulas in to page 2 University of Boston Brian photo A van used for transporting special needs students burst into due to an electrical forcing the evacuation of the Quinn Building June 13 Disabled van blows up by DeFazio At approximately on June 13 a van used to transport disabled students exploded in front of the Quinn Ad ministration Building Both of the vehicles two disabled passengers safely exited the van when the driver noticed smoke coming from the engine It started smoking and it caught on said the driver of the van Leonard Durham Durham was unsure of the cause of the fire The flames which engulfed the vehicle moments after the engine began to smoke shot upward scorching the facade of the administration building The heat and flames left the dark red brickwork on the face of the building directly above the van a charcoal gray The explosion prompted a police of the administration building to pull the fire alarm which resulted in the evacuation of the building The Boston Fire Department arrived upon the scene within minutes The van was one of a fleet of roughly 80 vehicles known as the Ride that are own ed by the Massachusetts Bay Transporta tion Authority The vehicles are meant to serve the disabled and elderly communities According to MBTA Public Informa tion Officer Peter Dimond operation of the vehicles in Boston has been contracted to a nonprofit organiza tion for the past 11 years The organiza tion Transportation for the Handicapped and Elderly in Massachusetts is in charge of the day to day scheduling operations and maintenance of the vans according to Dimond He also ex that different contractors operate the Ride for the MBTA in different subur ban regions of Massachusetts As of July 1 the Boston contract will belong to a corporation Transportation Management Services Inc There is absolutely no relation bet ween the change in contract and the van stated Dimond last week in a telephone interview The decision was made in he added saying that a selection process began last December to determine which of a number of companies would be awarded the Ride contract According to Dimond no similar ac have ever occured with the many other Ride vans Last year we pulled all of the vehicles into our he said to page 3 Women senators attend leadership conference by Staci Davis A delegation of female student leaders the Downtown and Harbor campuses attended the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders held June 24 at George Washington University in Washington The delegation was the first to repre sent UMB since the conferences tion in 1983 The delegates who participated in the conference were UMB Student Senators Patrice Gayle Cox Kathy Maloney Thanh Nguyen and Sharon Sanmartino of the Student Activities Of fice A special steering committee formed by the student senate selected the participants based on letters of interest received A delegation from the Womens Center also attended the conference but the delegates names were not available at press time The conference cosponsored by the American Association of University Women and other organizations ed an opportunity for the nations female student leaders to reflect and understand the challenges and issues aced on and off campus The eve so participation in leadership at the local state and federal levels Workshops a preconference briefing on the status of current legislation of in terest and an awards banquet featuring Louisiana Congresswoman Lindy Boggs as keynote speaker were the highlights of the three day conference For the UMB delegation the high point of the Washington visit was meeting with US senators and congressmen from the Greater Boston area The delegates arrived a day ahead to meet with Congressmen Joseph Kennedy Barney Frank and Nicholas Mavroules as well as aides from the offices of Con gressmen Edward Markey Joe Moakley and Ed Boiling Topics discussed includ ed current legislation passed such as the equal rights and cutbacks in funding for basic education and library resources We tried to send a clear message to the congressmen that students are always around said Maloney We students are just as concerned with equal rights and other legislation not just campus Delegate a student at the Downtown Campus had the opportunity to discuss many issues with Kennedy a alumnus including the continued deterioration of the Downtown Campus Congressman Kennedy was very dismayed to hear of the continued demise of stated and we plan to keep him informed of the events that take has already received correspondence from the office regarding issues discussed Overall the congressmen seemed helpful and they agreed with us on many issues said The coherence delegates agreed that the conference was enlightening and hope to send a delegation from UMB next year We all learned a lot from the different workshops we attended and we hope to implement some of the said Maloney Ideas for future consideration included sponsoring a conference on cam pus and conducting a resume workshop which will teach students how to properly write a resume that will be effective I would like to sponsor the resume workshop because it would be a great ser vice to the students at said Maloney INDEX TRACK 12
