   Mass Media (Newspaper) - February 14, 1984, Boston, Massachusetts                                MARTHA LIEBS IN LANDSCAPE Of THE BODY debuts at fit by Brian Patterson Why should a princess toss her golden ball like a bubble and drop it into a well The Frog Prince The play is Landscape of The written by playwright and screenwriter John Guare an Academy Award nominee in 1980 for his screen play for Atlantic a film directed by Louis Malle Landscape of The Body is about a woman nam ed Betty Yearn who travels from her hometown Bangor Maine to New York City with her 14yearold son to page 15 I i i I I M I m 1 Wt i I i I Election Issue Volume 18 Issue 21 University of February 14 1984 Two sides sharply divided as Free Period discussion continues Peter Gawles of the student member Senate by Martha Leibs Efforts are being made to reinstate a free period in the academic curriculum of The proposed period is drawing conflicting responses about the desirability of such a free time A free period would provide the vitality the UMass campus needs claims student Peter Gawles Gawles a member of the College of Arts and Sciences CAS Senate has formed a task force with Economics Professor Mary Ann Cassella to reopen the issue of a free period to be considered by the Senate and the senate is the governing body for CAS made up of students faculty and administrators They make decisions on various policy issues and are subject to the final decision of the Chancellor Cassella felt the attempt to reinstate a free period at UMass should not just be a student effort I felt some member of the faculty should be on the inside looking into period is desirable since it would pro vide more academic and social interac tion among students Cassella also pointed out UMass has a good tutor ing program but students who have no time cant take advantage of Gawles and Cassella have both cir questionnaires regarding the proposed free period Gawles sent his to Recognized Student Organizations Cassella sent hers to each of the Academic Depart ments Gawles said that the few responses hes received from various student organizations have been over Kate Powers President of the UMB Chapter of one of the organizations in favor of a free period said that a free period would be beneficial to students since UMass is a commuter college Having a free period during the day we can have much more involvement between community hereY A free encourage school spirits give students a chance to join clubs they didnt have the oppor to According to Cassella responses from a few faculty departments have not been as favorable in fact one writ ten response was absolutely and another this is not a high Cassella hopes responses to her ques will increase in the next few weeks as it works its way into the agen da of each departmental meeting Cassella hopes all members of each department not only the chairpersons will consider a free period Gawles and Cassella agreed that the biggest objection raised by the faculty and those opposed to the free period is the difficulty it presents in scheduling enough classes for students to page 5 New Regents admission standards mean gradual change for UMB by Steve Wagner Last month the Board of Regents of Higher Education formally approved an admissions standards policy for the entire Massachusetts public higher educational system However accor ding to university administrators it may be some time before the effects of the new policy are felt at When asked what changes will occur because of the Regents action Donald Babcock associate chancellor for plan ning said We will be able to answer that question better in two or three Similarly Douglas Hartnagel dean of Enrollment Services told The Mass Media that on the the new policy will not affect the admi sions process at UMB The Regents action came after a year of controversy public hearings and behind the scenes by UMass administration officials from the Amherst and Boston campuses as well as from the President Knapps of fice Consequently the Regents new policy is substantially different from last years initial draft proposal The policy establishes academic units that are to be phased in over a four year period and which specify how many courses high school students are required to take in five general areas English mathematics natural and physical science social science and foreign language These requirements To page 4 The ac tion came after a year of controversy public hearings and behind the scenes by UMass administra tion officials from the Amherst and Boston campuses as well as from the President Knapps office Don Babcock Assoc Chancellor for planning
