   Mass Media (Newspaper) - September 21, 1982, Boston, Massachusetts                                RECEIVED IN LIBRARY SEP 2 7 F Is Glamour Dead Seest thou not I say what a de formed thief this fashion is J see that fashion wears out more apparel than the man But are thou not thyself with fashion too William Shakespeare Much Ado About Nothing UMass students display their giddy ness in the centerfold V 17 Issue 7 University of September 21 1982 Knapp appoints assistant to work with Boston schools by Steve Wagner David Knapp president of UMass in a speech to the University Assembly Sept 13 said the public school systems which he considers of societys most pressing can no longer be ignored He announced the appointment of a special assistant who will assess the uni relation to the public schools This assistant according to Knapp will also be working part time with Boston School Superintendent Robert Spillane suggesting improvements in the curriculum After the Assembly meeting Knapp told The Mass Media that during the 1950s universities were highly involved with the public school systems But then they the universities just walked away from this relationship Now its time we stop complaining and start he said In his speech President Knapp also said the steady deterioration of the Amherst physical plant and the space problems here at Boston are affecting the quality of education He estimates the price tag to solve these problems would be million In a reception after the meeting Chan cellor Robert Corrigan said the physical plant at the Harbor Campus is in pretty good but the administration is trying to convince the legislature to fund remodeling and enlarging of classrooms The Assembly also voted to have the Steering Committee discuss changing the bylaws so that certain departments at the Huntington Ave campus will have repre sentation on various committees The Steering Committee is to bring these suggested changes to the next meet ing Oct 4 where they will be voted on by the Assembly Students vote no confidence in OBrien by Ron MacDonald Choosing to ignore a 73 vote of no confidence by the student members of the Assembly student assembly co chair Cathy OBrien has refused to resign her position The vote taken Tuesday followed sion and subsequent withdrawal of an offer of resignation as reported in last weeks Mass Media The reason we convened the meet ing was to clarify the situation and to make some determination as to where we should go from said student assembly member Robert Levitsky resignation offer came fol lowing a dispute between her and Stu dent Trustee Mariann Samaha The two disagreed over what action to take following the disclosure of an irreg in the election for faculty co chair of the assembly The vote was only taken because the students were concerned that Mari ann and Cathy could not work said student assembly member Peter Marino After questioning the student trustee and the student the members voted After the vote OBrien refused to resign when asked to do so by the convener She is very new to the political said convener Levitsky By her own admission she made certain mistakes What the students want in their chair is someone who can secure the trust of those she has to work he said OBrien contends she has not been given the opportunity to prove her ability She admitted it would now be more difficult I dont pretend it will be easy but I think I can do the she said No I wont resign I will prove Student Assembly member Mabeth explained her view about the vote As one of the students involved in that vote I believed that if we showed the student that we had no faith in her then she would step down She is not going to do that We cant let it become divisive because we have much to she said OBrien said she does not expect the vote or her dispute with Samaha to affect future dealings of the Assembly If we have an issue to with 1 hope the students could put that be hind and deal with the issue 1 hope that somehow Mariann and 1 will put things behind us and continue to work it she said UMass President David Knapp right and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Robert Greene c at reception following the Assembly meeting on Sept 13 PHOTO BY KON IS inauguration to the airwaves on Sunday
