Mass Media, The (Newspaper) - November 5, 1968, Boston, Massachusetts The MASS MEDIA fto truth shall make you VOL Ill NO 7 University of November 5 1968 In town Space Committee Report by Hank Wojcicki The thirty day delay that the Board of Trustees granted on October 21st is being put to good use by the InTown Space Committee The Monday meetings of the committee have been well attended by both faculty and students A well put together package will be ready for presentation to the Board of Trustees by the time the November 20 deadline rolls around This package will include new space proposals utilizing space from at least one of the as yet undisclosed core city space offers made to Also included in the package are in depth position papers from the faculty and students a redefinition of our goals and purposes and a concrete plan covering all phases of the projected the plastic fantastic university urban university of the future Mr Clinchey a representative of the Ford Foundation is assisting the InTown Space Committee in t f la tion and coordination of the new presentation The proposed university will consist of individual colleges with students in each The faculty will be structured on a centralized departmental structure Courses from each of the departments will be taught in each of the colleges A high degree of with and participation in the cultural and business life of the city will be facilitated by the extensive use of multiple use structures For example our business administration courses could be taught in buildings that house a stock brokerage or a group of business consulting firms Our Music and Drama Departments could be housed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Theater Company and our Athletic Department could share a new domed stadium with the Patriots and the Red Sox Each of the individual colleges would have instantaneous access to the central stacks of our massive library via computerized information retrieval systems The Space Committee while developing the university it snakes through the heart of the city has not neglected the ancient monastic academic tradition A mountain could be purchased in the wilderness for scholars to do and introspective work One of the greatest problems to be overcome is how do we create a sense of the whole university a sense of community Some of the ways that this can be met are through central a d central departmental offices a central student union housing all of student central cultural and athletic facilities A central science building housing exotic research equipment But in the end it will be up to the people who make up the University to create the sense of community by their own If the response to the MASS Media Housing Questionnaire in the last issue is any indication of were in bad shape This questionnaire which was to aid the Space Committee in addressing itself to the question of housing was filled out by two percent of the student body Letters from the student body would be helpful to the Space Committee now Possible subjects are how the urban experience has contributed to my education on Cultural Sport and student facilities and programs that the new should include These letters should be addressed to The Space Committee Mass Media Communist Candidate by John OConnor Im not a normal candidate
