Stray at SPCA a big hit in shows Special to The Extra SAN LEON Theres a star residing at the Galveston County SPCA Sleek white knows shes the reigning feline at the shelter Across the wall of the cat tery building march a row of rosettes attesting to her suc cess in cat show circles Whats a show cat doing at the SPCA short for Cry was brought to the shelter by animal control almost two years ago as a tiny four stray The biggest thing about her was her howl In no time at all the feisty kitten captured the hearts of the staff members and teers Shelter manager Tam my Sikes was fascinated by the stray and the kitten soon took up residence in her office Something about that cat struck she says adding that solid white cats are fairly uncommon The fact that had one copper eye and one blue eye was even more unique This peculiarity known among cat fanciers as odd is desirable in show cats Although cant trace her ancestry back or display any registration papers she can compete at cat shows in the household pet division Beverly Holmes SPCA board president shelter teer and cat breeder also saw possibilities in the cat and of to sponsor her and take her to show along with her own show cats Holmes pro vided transportation and paid all the entry fees for and the cats show biz career was launched Holmes evaluation of the shelter cat quickly proved cor rect It takes show points to become a Control and Improvement District No 1 will be coming to the rescue with a new conservation kit that will be mailed to all customers Its guaranteed to help you save precious water and sometimes even more of your precious hard earned money According to Water Company general manager Ivan Langford the idea isnt new except to this area There are many water authorities and water districts that have sent these types of con servation kits to their says Langford They serve many purposes but the main benefit is that they explain good water con servation methods and supply customers with the materials to conserve water and The water conservation kits will contain two plastic bags accord ing to Langford toilets are the largest single water waster in your two shower tors one for regular shower heads and one for shower heads with a ball at the end of the shower arm and three packages containing two leak detector tablets to check the flapper valve in the toilet tank for leaks A complete set of instructions for the use of all materials is included with each kit As an added benefit the kits will also include a consumer in formation brochure detailing other methods of saving water and ex plaining the various services of by No 1 Our purpose is to help our cus tomers not only save water and money in the obvious ways but to help them save on things like gas and electricity which is required for hot Langford said Another reason is to show them that we care about how much they pay for their water and sewer and we want to try everything within reason to ensure they get the honored for safety records TEXAS CITY Amoco Oil Texas City refinery and Amoco Chemicals Texas City plant have each been recognized for safety achieve ments during 1986 Managers of the two local facili ties traveled to San Antonio recently to accept the awards from the National Petroleum Refiners Association Texas City refinery employees were recognized for working over 1 million hours without a lost workday injury involving days away from work Manager Lee Sandheinrich ac the award on behalf of the employees who completed safe hours last vear The record was set during a period from January 18 to July 15 1986 Amoco Chemicals Co employees were saluted for their safe work record of over 1 million hours Plant Manger Dick Zielinski ac the award and noted that the 486 Texas City plant employees had no serious injuries from October 23 1985 to October 23 1986 During this period employees accumulated safe hours Both Amoco facilities have fully staffed and experienced safety departments The two plants received seven different safety awards during the annual meeting of the Former soldier in Villas army to be part of COMs Cinco De Mayo celebration TEXAS CITY The Cinco De Mayo celebration at College of the Mainland on Tuesday May 5 will have the festive ingredients of food and music plus a personal touch of history in the appearance of Houston businessman Leo who rode with the Mex ican revolutionary Pancho Villa in the early part of this century owner of Leos Res in Houston is featured in a video on the Mexican Revolution shot several years ago at COM He will return to COM May 5 at of the lew surviving members of Villas It was a 14yearold Leo Reynosa who joined up with Pan cho Villa in 1913 about the same time the United States was establishing its first aviation combat unit in Texas City in an of border trouble with Villa The same squadron which moved to San Diego later that year finally saw action with Gen eral border expedition in Reynosa saw plenty of action in the three years he roamed with Villas troops in northern Mexico And he enjoys a permanent plae in the pictoral history of the Revo lution as the smiling young face in a famous photo of Villa and his men taken at the National Palace in December of 1914 As Reynosa said in a interview published last year I think Villa was a great man and hes secure in Mexican history Pancho Villa was like a Robin Hood he COM from noon until according to Urbina Leo right shows a picture of Pancho Villa to Dr Manuel Urbina Hitchcock students take first at state HITCHCOCK A group of students at the Hitchcock dent School District won first place at he state vocational com petition held recently in Corpus Christi Crosby Junior High students Minerva Torres David MaMahon Roy Washington Jerry Barmore and Duane Crear won first place awards after they each rebuilt an engine at the competition held early this month In addition three General Construction Trades and Coop students from Hitchcock High School received first place honors and one student took second place Michael Gregorcyk Chris Thompson and Tony Washington won first place and Jessica Johnson won second place Boy Scouts launch membership drive TEXAS CITY The Mainland District of the Boy Scouts of America kicks off its spring membership drive next week Boys in grade 112 are invited to join their local scouting units and catch the scouting spirit Signup rallies will be conducted for boys in grades 14 April 28 at local elementary schools beginning at 7 Boys in the fifth grade and above are invited to attend scout troop open houses throughout the week
