Ludington Daily News (Newspaper) - April 7, 1977, Ludington, Michigan Scottville Selected As Site For Weir On River By RICHARD DANCZ Dally News Start Writer SCOTTVILLE Salmon fishermen and trout anglers have taken turns generally condemning and infrequently praising the Department of Natural Resources ever since the announcement that a weir was going to be placed in the Pere Marquette Protests ranging from loss of revenue to business along the river from Scottville up to to charges of bowing to vested interest And there has been a temporary setback to a proposed river salmon derby because of the apparent indecision by the DNR on the weir site and the possibility of heavy river bank All of and has become so much history now after Dave fisheries biologist at the field office in straightened the record out while admitting that there were still a lot of probables said that pipe weir will be placed in the PM either at the eastern edge of the city limits or no further upstream than a quarter mile past the weir will be temporary this if no complications may become a permanent temporary absolute site been deter mined yet until a site committee makes an fish will be stopped for two months in September and October from going upstream and harvested by fishermen only but the survivors will all be released in November or whenever biologists feel the major portion of the run is Scottville is attempting to secure federal funding through the soil conservation service for bank that our department is logical enough that if something goes wrong or Our department Is logical enough that If something goes wrong or river well have to try something Maclean hurts river well have to try something What will happen to the ap will be something similar to the fishing site at the Ludington State Park on the Sauble River where controlled snagging by permit has created a relatively healthy thats probably the something like MacLean It provides a good spot where fish are giving the fishermen good and its more easily controlled Thats why we have decided on that general area to the Scottville Users of the Riverside who may be ready to howl in protest over a probable rush from who would destroy the delicate banks along the can rest in the knowledge that bank stabilization has already been thought Even if there wasnt a snagging zone or a the banks should be stabilized at the MacLean There is a danger of losing them just as it is The city is attempting to secure federal funding with the soil conservation service to do engineering work in a stabilization project similar to that at the Ludington State MacLean didnt say it is generally understood that creation of a snagging zone which would endanger banks would bring a priority on the availability of federal You well have to do this thing on a trial and error MacLean ex Our department is logical enough that if something goes wrong or hurts river well have to try something Right the priority on the weir is the site something which will be determined soon when a select committee studys the possible A criteria will be a spot in the river where a slight backup of water wont create additional bank erosion or Once the site is the weir will be basically using pipes set at slight vertical angles about an inch apart to allow water through but preventing all but the smallest fish to pass The weir would be driven or jetted into the river bottom with no or at least very few bank Wed have a slight water MacLean but thats why the site is so And wed probably try and develop some kind of portage for canoeists The weir would go in around the first of September or when the salmon began their heaviest migrating runs and stay there until the heaviest run was around the end of October Harvesting would be exclusively through snagging or bait and at the end of the weir the pipes would See WEIR on Page 6 The Weather Partly cloudy tonight and Friday and Low High mid 30s EXTENDED OUTLOOK Saturday through Monday A
