Logansport Press (Newspaper) - August 2, 1950, Logansport, Indiana Weather GOVERNMENT FORECAST Fair less humid today and Thursday LOGANSPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY LOGANSPORT PRESS Only Local Morning Paper Serving Cass Carroll Pulaski Miami Fulton White Counties 419 Days Without A Traffic Ac in VOL 30 NO 42 NBA LOGANSPORT INDIANA WEDNESDAY AUGUST 2 1950 THE ASSOCIATED PRICE FIVE CENTS George E SOKOLSKY These Days EDGE OF DOOM Sam Goldwyn insisted upon my seeing his forthcoming picture Edge of Doom I like Sam Gold wyn because somehow he has managed to remain the boy from Warsaw who ran across the bor der into Germany at some such age as 11 and then had to work his way to America and a new life That story is more dramatic than all the pictures Goldwyn has ever made I AM NOT a movie fan The socalled Escape Picture of re cent vintage does not help me forget reality nor do I enjoy the endless repetition of the same plots slightly differently garbed The pictures I like do not seem to do so well For instance I went wild about Walter Wagners Joan YANKS WAGE ATTACK AT PUSAN Swimming Class for School Boys Closes Tuesday Coach Showalter Pleased With Progress Made By Youngsters Swimming classes for grade school and junior high school boys were closed at the high school pool yesterday afternoon Coach Keith Showalter who handled the 125 youngsters through all but one of the seven or Arc but my enthusiasm did weeks declared the program j not seem to matter nearly a 100 per cent success j However Sam Goldwyn was Besides escaping any accidents very persuasive about his picture Edge of Doom He seemed to feel that it was a daring adven ture So I agreed to see it up in these Berkshire Hills at the lit tle theatre in Great Barringlon to which I repaired with all the children on this farm and with my neighbor Herbert Arnold the geologist Now I did not expect what I got and I do not know how audiences will take this picture It is an unrelieved blow straight to the solar more accurately at conscience It took me hours to get over the effects of seeing life at its most sordid with human being struggling against all the forces of evil and destruction and emerging in the end with the certainty that only the truth will prevail no matter how horrible the truth may be in the pool the fifty grade school lads who could not keep them selves afloat at the close of school can all paddle around by them selves at least a little With the possible exception of but one or two every one of them can swim the 20 feet across the pool dei clares with us We are not hard We are not fervent We are not sure have broken away from our moorings which held us from the beginning in New England and Virginia until sometime in this twentieth century Did we break loose or was our line cut A nation cannot be stronger than its beliefs nor can beliefs be something manufac tured to fit the moment Let me a week ask you this for a century the I Arm Nations
