Logansport Press (Newspaper) - June 23, 1950, Logansport, Indiana Weather GOVERNMENT FORECAST Cloudy warm today and Saturday LOGANSPORT PRE Only local Morning Paper Serving Cass Carroll Pulaski Miami Fulton White Counties Without A FaUl Traffic Ac in Logansport VOL 30 NO 9 NBA LOGANSPORT INDIANA FRIDAY JUNE 23 1950 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PRICE FIVE CENTS George E SOKOLSKY These Days THE DEPARTURE OF TOM DEWEY Not yet 50 Tom Dewey has had one of the most picturesque car eers ever to be the lot of a small town boy who made the grade in the largest city Coming from Owosso Mich the son of a newspaperman Tom Dewey had been brought up in the moderate circumstances of middle western families and he terminates his political career in the same eco nomic circumstances TOM DEWEY has been able to do little more than pay as he went in an era when small fry turn themselves into rich men with every whirl of the game of poli tics The financial problem of liv ing up to ones position without the means to do it can become a very practical one for a person takes family responsibility Tom Deweys personality is not such as wins people to him easily He is not the most warmhearted and cordial of men and in the arrangement of his political career he has been too rigid for the hail traditions of our people Nevertheless his team as it has been called of capable men has remained with him throughout his career all of them at great personal sacri fice and all of them coming out of positions of temptation and oppor without scandal That has been public service at its best and has undoubtedly been the key stone of Deweys success DEWEYS PREEMINENCE has been as an administrator rather than as a politician He has been Governor of New York state two terms of four years each and has given a difficult and intricate gov and social structure the best administration it has ever known Even his political enemies concede his vast abilities as an ex Twice nominated for the dency he was twice defeated the second time unnecessarily as most students of the problem as sert Although he is the titular head of the Republican party he has no great personal following within it Yet because of his un usual administrative abilities he is admired without being beloved His influence may be greater as a private citizen than it has been as a governor speaking on interna tional problems HIS UNWILLINGNESS to run for reelection as governor of New York in a year when his tion is certain is in culmination of illness of fatigue and of the pro fits of honesty Tom Dewey can not out of his wages as a public official provide adequately for his family This is true of so many men in public life It is even truer of men who dare not enter public because of its cost to ones family In an era when money is being wasted as an article of faith all public officials are underpaid When it grows increasingly dif to save the cost of a politi cal career is becoming increasing ly prohibitive Members of Con gress help themselves by practic ing law delivering lectures or even putting a relative on the pay roll but administrative officials cannot earn on the side WHEN A GOVERNOR of a state like New York tries to live on 000 a year and pay income taxes he finds himself unable to do much more than get by The likelihood is that he may even have to go into his savings if any or borrow from friends or relatives Because the cost of public life in big cities is fast becoming prohibitive in a city like New York with more 8000000 to choose from the general level of public men is so low And that is becoming increas ingly true throughout the nation Unfortunately the Republicans do not have a strong candidate to replace Tom Dewey The Joe Hanley age 74 is a charming personality a good campaigner and popular among those who know him He might make the grade THE DEMOCRATS have a horde of candidates including Franklin D Roosevelt Jr Oscar Ewing the Socialized medicine man Judge Ferdinand Judge Charles Froessel both popular and suitable candidates Mayor Wil liam ODwyer of New York and inexplicable phenomenon who everything wrong and re mains politically potent and James A Farley who can be elected by merely announcing that he is a candidate The Republicans face a problem in this galaxy which they cannot lake in their stride They will have tc do more than work hard to hold this state EXTEND DRAFT ACT THREE YEARS McHale Asserts Campbell Choice for Senator Post Predicts Demo Nomina tion Will be Made on First Ballot Indianapolis June 22 M executive and Rep Jacobs talked together today in Washing ton DC but neither would talk for publication afterward Governor Schricker attended President Trumans luncheon for visiting state chief executives and is expected to be back in his cap itol office Saturday morning A number of persons in the Schricker administration is act ive in the Jacobs campaign Truman Stays Out President Truman refused to be drawn into the Indiana race He told a press conference today he would not take sides in the Indi ana senatorial contest After Campbell left the Depart ment of Justice he said he had a letter from the President purport ing to be an endorsement of his candidacy Governor and forces count ered with the observation the let ter was merely one of apprecia tion for a job well clone However the Governor has not hesitated to criticize the Truman administration and its policies when he disagrees Price an admitted longshot en try said he would open ters in the Claypool hotel tomor row He has hired Courtley Niman of Indianapolis as a publicity man Two more candidates for minor i state offices paid their assessments i to the Democratic state tee They are Donald A Rogers 1 of Bloomington
