empty silk hung with gleeful anticipa tion or hopeful optimism the night before It had been believed by most of the applicants that Fickle would enact the role of Santa Clans and announce the rest of his appointees yesterday or Christmas eve Fickle now says there may be something doing Mon day or Tuesday GIVES DANCE AT WILSON HOME Miss Dorothy Wilson entertained a party of friends last evening at her home in Broadway in honor of guests who are with her for the holidays Georgiana Wilson nnd Frank Stutesman Peru and Thomas Hendricks Indianapolis Dancing was indulged in during the evening and refreshments wers The home was handsomely decorated MEANS FIGHT ON MORGAN AND STANDARD CONTROL New York Dec purchase by the conservative international bank ing firm of Speyer Co of the Van derbilt stock in the Union Trast Com pany one of the strongest financial in in the east just announced is regarded in Wall street as the first step in a bitter fight for control of the money market in opposition to T Pier pont Morgan Co and to the Nation al City Bank with its Standard Oil con The large banking firms heie which have been out of the pale the Mor gan combination and outside of the Standard Oil influence have found that they were being outdone by the power ful cliques and have long been wait ing for an opportunity to assert their Influence and strength The National City Bank has long heen the leader of the money market and has practically controlled the rate of interest for the last few years This institution do so because it has had at its disposal the funds of John D Rockefeller and his associates Mor gan on the other hand has had the Insurance companies behind him and added to this the resources of the sev en or eight banks and trust companies which he also controls While the possession of the Vancler bilt holdings does not carry actual con trol of the Union company it does when added to the stock already held hy the Speyers bar any other interest from acquiring the upper hand the management of the companys 65000 000 James Speyer is a director of twelve hanks and trust companies of three railroads and insurance companies JUDGE AS EMBEZZLER Berlin Dec Greiner a of the high court of Bavaria age 73 has been arrested on charges of embezzlement extending over 30 years The judge who retired on a pension last summer is accused of systematic ally appropriating trustee funds placed in his care So far the authorities have traced an alleged embezzlement of the nominal Sinn of but owing to the long period over which the accusations ex tend It is asserted that the case will take on much larger proportions The court has refused an offer of hail made BELIEVE BOGUS BANK EXAMINER IS IN PLOT National Bankers Are Pinkerton Agency Recently Lost Contract to Protect A from Washington states that national bank directors all over the country have been warn ed to be careful about admitting bank examiners to their premises until they have been made to produce proper credentials the order having been made necessary by the number of instances reported recently where represented themselves to be examiners and have sought to gain entrance to banks When ask ed to show their credentials before the books were turned over to them these men it is alleged have left failing to pay their hotel bills It is thought that an organized band is planning a systematic campaign of safe blowing members of the crooked coterie trying to attend directors meet ings for the purpose of gaming infor mation concerning the banks that would lend success ta their plans The Pinkerton detective agency which has guarded all banks owned by members of the American Bankers were recently released from tins con tract which was given a smaller agency and this the Logansport district of the North In diana Conference of the M E church which will open in this city Monday afternoon at the Broadway M E church The meeting is the first of this kind to be held in and will be especially attractive to the people of the nearby towns who are able to attend Four delegates from the of board of the church the Sunday schools Epworth League and Womans Foreign Missionary society will be present in addition to the pastors of the various churches in the district Rev C C Cissell district superintend ent and Rev John C White have charge of the meeting and will be as by Rev Arnold of the Market Street M E church and Rev E C Dunn of the Wheatland Avenue M E church An able corps of speakers of mere than national reputation have been secured together with a the Land of China Mr Tan Chang Lok Malaysia HAS TWO ACCIDENTS A serious accident was narrowly averted yesterday on the Vandalia railroad at Camden yesterday when Vandalia freight second No 69 crashed into the rear of Vandalia passenger train No 40 in charge of Conductor Perkins The rear car on the passenger train was damaged to some extent and the engine of the freight was broken but no one was hurt Conductor Mackey was in charge of No 68 An open switch clogged up with the snow caused the engine and two cars of Vandalia freight first No 6S to leave the track yesterday The main track was blocked and traffic was delayed about two hours as a re sult of the accident The train was in charge of Conductor Burgman BLUE FOR STARVING SOLDIERS Bluefields via Wireless to Dec 25 Christmas was Christmas in name only in Bluefields and Rama where two thousand captured govern ment soldiers are sick or hungry and hundreds are lying on suffering from wounds received in the fighting iania and Recreo Despite the heroic attempts of the authorities aided by the surgeons 2nd sailers of the American warships to relieve the suffering the facilities are inadequate that but little progress has been made Only enough provisions are on hand to give the soldiers scant rations The medical and surgical equipment is wholly inadequate to meet the most pressing needs Scores of wounded soldiers are in danger of death unless immediate re lief is furnished but owing to the ab sence of needed antiseptics and the of competent operators many of them will probably die with their wounds unattended Relief boats are reported to be on the way but unless they arrive within the next two days the death toll in the im hospitals will decimate the ranks of the captives o i COLOR NO CITIZENSHIP BAR Boston Dec admitting four Armenians to citizenship today Judge Lowell in the United States circuit court said that western As have become so mixed with Eu that it is impossible to tell whether they should come under the nations exclusion statutes The judge said that until amends the statutes to provide more specifically what persons may be admitted the circuit court will not deny citizenship to aliens on ac count of color CONVICTED AND SENTENCED FOR FORGING CHECK St Louis Mo Dec Dwight Fortner was found guilty of uttering a check for 512000 bearing the forged in of Henry C Tulley by a jury tonight He was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary Fortner was a veal estate dealer and tried to sell an apartment building owned by Tulley to F C Steer He obtained a check from Steer congress 5 as earnest money and then Tulley re fused to continue the deal Fortner was traced to Panama and then to Paris where he was caught and returned to St Louis A motion for an appeal was filed SET PACE FOR SANTA IN SUNDAY SCHOOL Rev A Greenman Marion for merly pastor of the Methodist church in this city nearly thirty years ago and who is now in his eighties re calls that in former times it was not the custom for the children of the churches and Sunday schools to take part in a Christmas program While Rev Greenman was here the chil j dren of the M E church took part j in Christmas festivities for the first time Since then it has become a widespread custom Rev Greenman has heen a resident of this state since 1836 Word was received fin this city yes afternoon from St Lukes hos pital where Dr C L Thomas has been confined since his accident in Chicago that his condition had taken a sud den turn for the worse He suffered a broken skull when the auto in which he was riding turned turtle Another difficult and dangerous operation to remove the pressure from his brain was necessary if his life is to be saved The operation was performed last night and if it proves successful Dr Thomas will have a chance for recovery Mrs Thomas and Willard Thomas will remain with the doctor until the outcome of the operation is known Dr H B Hill Dr Thomas partner who was in Bloomingdale was notified by phone of the critical condition of Dr Thomas and left immediately for Chicago The announcement of the change in Dr Thomas condition comes as a shock to his friends and he was be to be en the road to recovery and in a few weeks more it was ex he would be able to be brought home RAVES AS HE RUNS Nicaragua Dec longer any doubt remains of former President Intention to flee from Nicaragua Zelaya is now here under a strong guard of his most faith ful henchmen awaiting an opportun ity to board the Mexican gunboat Gen eral Guerrero and put as many miles as possible between himself and his revolution ridden country It was semiofficially stated that the American ships now off Corinto would mke no objection to depar ture Zelaya himself fears that the Americans will arrest him on a charge of causing the murder of Groce and Cannon the two Americans who join ed forces with the revolutionists The officers of the American ships however say they have received no orders to intercept Zelaya Zelaya arrived here from Managua evening He is suffering from a nervous breakdown and will not show himself in public without a heavy guard A small army accompanied him from Managua and both the boat trip to and the journey by rail from were guarded every mile of the way Ze laya still goes into of rage when speaking of provisional Presi dent Estrada and the United States He declares Nicaragua is not through with Estrada and that he will pay the penalty for plunging the country into ruin Zelaya denied the story that he had plundered Nicaragua of millions of dol lars and that he has hidden and in vested his soils I havent a dollar besides the money to me as president and the legitimate money from legitimate business enterprises he said STATE POLICE QUELL BATTLE OVER A DOLL Dec doll and the argument of two children for its pos session caused more trouble at Meadow Lands near here than ever was known in the history of that mining town Two little girls after arguing for the possession of a doll fastened their fingers in each others locks and pull ed with all their might while they screamed with anger and pain The women and men of their families rush ed from their homes and in an instant the two families were fighting In less than ten minutes a hundred men were battling up and down the main street cf the town Bricks were thrown and clubs were used with free dom Several combatants were knock ed unconscious A squad of state po lice who were near Meadow Lands galloped into the town using their maces on every fighting man near them Twelve of the combatants were handcuffed and taken before a justice of the peace Frank Willis Indianapolis is thought to be lying in a serious con dition at some home in this city as the result of an auto accident that is said to have happened in this city Mrs Miller a bride of two weeks was notified at Friday even ing by telegram that her husband had been injured near this city and that they were taking him to a hos pital in Indianapolis where she was to meet him He failed to arrive at Indianapolis Later in the day a friend of W D Kerlin Indianapolis telephoned from this city that Willis was here and badly injured He stated the auto had turned turtle and that Willis had sustained a broken leg and internal injuries but did not state where he was W D Kerlin and Mrs Willis left Indianapolis this morning at for this city where they will investigate Mrs Kerlin stated last night over the phone that they were at a loss to account for the lack of information and their fears are accordingly aroused A man by the name of Arnold who to gether with Willis and another man from Elkhart were making the trip from Elkhart to Culver signed the tel egram received by Mrs Willis in Elk hart CHRISTMAS OBSERVED IN CHURCHES Special services will be held in all the churches of the city today in honor of Christmas and varied pro grams full of interest have been planned At the Cumberland church a special choir which sang at the Christmas entertainment given the children of the Sunday school Friday will sing At the Universalist church special exercises by the chil dren and a special address by the pastor will be held in the morning A thank offering service will be held at the Broadway M E church today in the interest of home missions Mrs W H Daniel of Decatur for merly of this city will address the meeting At the Wheatland Avenue M E church the service in the morning will be the Communion service and in the evening will be the Christmas service for which a good program has been At the First Presbyterian church an interesting song service has been planned for this afternoon at the time devoted to vesper seivice An interesting program has been prepared and will be given this morning at oclock for the mem bers of the Market Street M E Sunday school classes The program will consist of four musical numbers as follows Baritone Quartet with Soprano Ob Message of Christ Walter Stansbury Murray Espey Charles Brown Russell Osborn Mrs C H Brown Prince of Barrie B Adams Sunday School Chorus Young Ladies Night So Silent and Dunn Hazel Filby and Ethel and Esther 1 Murphy HUNGER RHEUMATISM CURE Long Branch Cal Dec ing ample means at his command William Nelson head of the Nelson Navigation company has invested in almost every known remedy to cure the rheumatism that has held him In its grip for years Finally to break its hold he has started on a thirty days fast and says he feels very much better already SALVATION ARMY MADE MANY HAPPY More than enough baskets were pre pared by the Salvation Army to take care of the poor yesterday seven bas kets which had been prepared for dis having been returned to headquarters when it was learned that the families not in reduced cir their names having been handed in either as a joke or by one of the children One hundred baskets were distributed at a cost oi more than a dollar apiece Anderson stated last night that he wished to thank the public for the liberal dona tions given the Army to carry on the work among the destitute the dona tions having been most liberal from all quarters So far as is known not a worthy family in the city was overlooked and steps were taken not only to relieve their condition for the present but to make arrangements so they may be able to support themselves in the fu ture Captain Anderson is preparing a re pert of the receipts and expenditures of the Army during the holidays which will be ready for publication Monday It is estimated that over in cash was collected together with a large quantity of provisions all of which have been put to good use The re maining baskets from the distribution yesterday will be used in the regular work of the Army which has been re now Fern Dowell 11yearold adopted daughter of Captain Anderson who is quarantined in the apartments above the Army hall with diphtheria was yesterday reported out of danger but it will be several weeks before the Captain will be able to return to his rooms In the mean time he has se cured rooms over the interurban sta tion The hall will be used as head quarters but there will be no public meetings there Captain Anderson has arranged for a series of cottage prayer meetings during the quarantine at homes in the city The tele phone is in the apartments above the hall but all communications for the captain can be telephoned to No 1G43 PEAKY TO SEEK SOUTH POLE Washington Dec Robert Peary has made the definite statement that he would search for the South Pole if a proper expedition could be arranged WOMAN SANTAS BEARD Charleston 111 Dec ap as Santa Claus wearing heavy false whiskers Miss Clara McCory drew too near the candles of a Christ mas tree and her beard caught fire She was seriously burned Miss Mc Cory is instructor of music in the Charleston schools and a prominent member of the Bachelor Girls Club which was giving a public Christmas entertainment for children at the pub lic library MRS HIMMELBERGER HOST TO MISSION CHILDREN Mrs Catherine Himmelberger en 55 small guests members of the Toledo street mission at her home 1601 Broadway from to yesterday afternoon and Miss Williams who has charge of the mis sion The children were taken to the Himmelberger home in a special car provided through the of Superintendent of the city car lines A Christmas tree was arranged for the children each being presented with a pair of wear I able stockings and mittens and every stocking and mitten filled with candy nuts Each of the boys were presented with a book and all the girls with dolls When the time to go came the chil dren expressed their appreciation of the treat In no uncertain tenni and one small boy cried rigorously he came he had to leare Weatherman or to Perfection of Day From the standpoint of the mer chants children poor and rich yester day was an ideal Christmas day witk more than ten inches of snow on ground making sleighing good provision made for the poor more thor this year than ever before ia the history of the city the charitable organizations and Salva tion Army working together to aid needy Yesterday promptly at noon merchants of the city wound up their business and closed in ob servance of the holiday wagons were busy until a late hour yesterday afternoon and messenger boys were busy until a late hour Merchants report a bigger holiday business than in former years and amount of mail matter handled by local office has set a record OW rail roads did an enormous business both in and out of the city many taking advantage of the Christmas rates ef yesterday A small force of men only was re to work at the shops while the railroad offices were closed wherever It was possible and the clerks and other employes granted holidays Owing to the heavy snow fall trains were delayed somewhat although it was not necessary to get out the snow plaw The interurban lines fared worse the cars being unable to mako any time and being sent through as best they were able without an effort to keep to schedule As many of city street car men were permitted to be off as possible the cars being rua on an ordinary light schedule o WOMAN SEEKS Indianapolis Dec second will of George which ia stead of her attorneys late today Emma Dare and Rodius were mar ried at Louisville at Louisville om Jan 21 1907 It was alleged that she abducted him from Indianapolis and that he was insane and the cou ple was pursued by detectives New York and Pittsburg and brought back to Indianapolis and he placed in a sanitarium A county court annulled the mar riage Elma Dare appealed to state supreme court and the matter awaits final decision there Rodius died last Monday A will and codicil made by him a few days before his marriage has been filed for probate It leaves the bulk of his fortune to the city and cuts off Elma Dare His relatives are protest ing the will on the ground that was insane for years before he made She will and that his estate should be divided among them The Rodius attorneys declare that he was sane when he made this first and the attorneys for Elma Dare state today that if he was sane then he was sane also when he matte the second will in her favor a tew days later TRUE London
