Successful Operation Performed On EXTENDED Official Announcement is Made By Board of Railway Commissioners COAL WILL NOf GET PREFERENCE WHEAT OTTAWA Dec to the exigencies of the grain movement the of Alberta coal to Ontario under the a ton rate will be extended in 1929 for a period of six months The tests next year will begin on January 15 and continue until July 15 The announcement was made today by officials of the board of railway commissioners who however stated that the transportation companies would not give the coal shipments pre- cedence over gram The early months of the year constitute a period when the grain transportation business was particularly heavy extension of time brings Alberta into line with the maritime provinces for the latter section of the country in their experimental movement of coal brought by water to Montreal enjoys the benefit of a special railway rate transported westward from the eastern metropolis while in winter a special experimental rate has been fixed for all-rail haul from the maritime mines to Montreal The tests run for a period months each year No provision has yet been made for granting a six months test period to Alberta for 1930 The railways have not yet turned in to the board of railway commissioners a statement of costs involved In the ex- periment for 1923 A hearing was held a month ago at which counsel for both the transportation companies declared that their cost sheets could riot be ready before the end of the current year 31 1939 Not until some time after that date will it be known if the government who are
