Laurel Ledger, The (Newspaper) - July 22, 1909, Laurel, Mississippi The Ledger Is wrong let the Gity Organ say so if we are correct the Mayor and three of his Council should resign THE LAUREL LEDGER Entered as Second-Class Mail Matter November at the Postoffice at Laurel of Congress of March VOL VIII NO 47 LAUREL JONES COUNTY MISS THURSDAY JULY 22 1909 PER YEAR EVIDENCE OF IMPROVEMENT Railroad Possibly Means Business by Operations Here A NEW STATION IS NEXT In Line of Section Houses Are Menace to East Front Sreet Property Holders The N 0 N E railroad has recently made slight ments on its property here which may be taken as a good omen of future material improvement The fence enclosing the small garden in front of the station has been put in good repairs and the general appearance of the lot improved Fairly good walks of plank and slag have been put in at the crossing on Central avenue The railroad evidently means to keep abreast with the spirit of growth in our town and is doubtless looking into the con- ditions of several of its holdings here with an eye to more rate expenditures for better vice and general development The station can no longer serve the demands naturally made on it It was erected when most sanguine hopes were to become a town of perhaps a thousand Now it is called upon to serve a city of more than ten times that population It was thought to accommodate an of ten traveling men a week but it now finds itself ing to serve Representatives of more than one hundred foreign every week Obviously we have grown out of its It belongs to a past which when Laurel thinks of she Was I ever that It is edly a relic of younger days Of course the railroad company are cognizant of these facts and de- steps will doubtless be taken in that direction at no distant date We will have a new depot Just in that connection let it be hoped that some favorable be made of the line of tion houses on East Front street south of Central avenue They front the railroad and therefore make some very obnoxious back yards fronting East street The negro inhabitants in these houses are very undesirable neighbors to the householders a- cross the street Anything like favorable relations are ble and in that of town real estate is kept down on account of the foregoing reasons These houses ought to be moved if not to the corporation line certainly further down the railroad Some of these improvements are now before the commission for investigation and tion And it is to be hoped that neither the railroad nor the com- mision shall be antagonised by those exercising too much en- and too little The railroad company will tainly recognize these things when they turn their attention to our town which it is hoped will be at an early date Consult Simmons CITED A lively session of the council was expected for Tuesday night's meeting but a quorum could not be corralled Whether this was an ordinary mishap or one for a purpose is for the interested ties to solve for themselves for a Laurel council never gives out information on its failure to form a public duty The people were curious to know what the board proposed to do with the REPAIR proposition on the old red store Private citizens are frequently turned down on their applications for repair permits for frame structures within the fire limits Mr Warren was not allowed to attach his building to a brick side At a recent meeting H H Rowell was turned down on re- pairing his building on front street not allowed to put back posts removed for side walk con- struction although the mayor had privately pledged to replace all damage caused by the moving of the side walk Some months ago a private citizen sought a permit to move the old red store onto a lot west of the rick Co but was lead to feel that it would be useless to go before the council as his lot was within the fire limits Later however when a member of the council be- came interested it was no ble to get a permit to move this old shack and leave it right on one of the most prominent ness thoroughfares When this move was threatened by tion it was agreed to sell it to be torn down but more light dawned to the interested parties one of whom note you is a member of the council and they proposed to show the people a trick or But more revolting still to a al public is the fact that after this old shack was on the lot re- pair work began at once without a permit and even more of an outrage still is that a quorum can't be had when citizens want to present this state of affairs to the council for redress We submit for the people of Laurel means one of two The parties interested in the financing of the old store move feel that they can depend upon the council to protect them or they propose to bully the town Marshal Duckworth ed today and found no permit for repairing the old store building He gave out orders that it would require a permit to continue Equal rights to all or special privileges to the few Let the mayor and the council respect thier own city ordinances or get down off the next stated that he had heard considerable cism of himself because of the fact that tho city had purchased some brick from the Bonita Brick company in he happens to be a stockholder Mr Parker said that he had made an and found that the Bonita Brick company had sold the city just worth of bricks sincd he was mayor but that in the future that company would refuse to sell the city any more bricks The above is taken from a Meridian paper reporting a cil meeting it for two reasons H shows that other towns do violate the law by ishing the city It also shows a decided contrast between the Meridian mayor and the Laurel mayor Here its none of the people's business The council does as it chooses law or no law and the man who wants to know their authority becomes a ing stock for them Miss Lula Smith Miss Lula Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs died at their home in Kingston this morning after an illness of six weeks with fever develops that a great deal of whiskey and beer has been sold here lately and most of it bv these agents who have the shipments here and get out and sell The people who prize morals and character more than money or or peace in the camp will be found lined up with the county officers who are willing to shoulder the responsibility and work in an fort to rid the community of these pests A constant and
