schools especially with all the statewide controversy over the short ages of money If youre a taxpayer isnt you certainly be investigating the situation confronting our schools Your chance will come Tuesday May 2 when the budget hearing is scheduled for our local schools It is difficult to predict what may come of the hearings Supt William Fisher has already said that he is proposing an cut in the City Schools budget for next Supt Philip zaies of the Town Schools will ask for the same amount of money as last year the legislators came up with real good answers to the crisis of the schools But on the other hand it doesnt seem that the New Mexico Education Department gave them than unjust criticism Weve got to say the legislators certainly tried to come up with some answers after having jt sprung on them at the last minute The New Mexico Education Department failed to give a true picture of the school situation when they completely confused everyone by asking for more money for in the coming year than they had received in the past year And then talking out of the other side of their mouth many of the schools might be forced to close unless the situation was remedied Much ot the money they requested was earmarked for executive salary increases The Mexico Education Department has pretty well gotten what they wanted in the past because of the lack of the public in the schools The public should be uniting out where the loopholes are in and just the duplications are occurring at the top level There is little question in our minds that a fine job is being done in the administration of the systems with the available money Our administrators have less than half the money that some of the richer counties educate the kids This is the point that needs in Why allowed to happen and what can be done to alleviate the situation If we sincerely Relieve in equal education for all kids then we need to get in there and pitch learn the facts acquaint other people with them find out why able condition exists in New Mexico and then have some and figures ready for the next session of the Legislature We have been glad to see the Now Mexico Taxpayers Association begin to sit up and take notice of the school situ ation Maybe the days of chumminess are over between the Taxpayers Association and M Education Department The schools are the biggest benefactors of the taxes in New Mexico so its heartening to see that the Taxpayers Assn begins to move in this direction Its time for a realistic picture to be presented regard ing our schools and until the taxpaying public takes the interest they should the distribution of school funds isnt apt to change any for Northern New Mexico County School Consolidation Bias Lopez superintendent Miguel county schools to 20 school consolidated into one unit for reasons of economy It must be pointed out that it is for economy only not for consolidation in the sense that one large school would accomodate all rural grade students Under a state law school taxes collected in one district can only be spent in the same district The poorer districts however have the larger school populations while the more prosperous district have ewer children on which to spend their education dollars Lopez will have an open meeting for all school districts on Friday May 19 at 10 a m at thc County Court House He is Hopeful of selling his idea of consolidating the county into one district thus equalizing the educational advantages for the children Rural school education in San Miguel county has dropped more than 50 percent in attendance in the past 10 years This year there are 1037 kids with 56 teachers In 1950 there were 2372 enrolled with better than 100 teachers It cost to educate each of the kids this year whereas it cost only in 1950 Also in 1950 there were 109 class rooms in use and this year only 56 were used Lopez says there would have been more in 1960 but funds were not available Lopez contemplates that if consolidation comes to the county schools there wont be any possibility of putting more than a couple p schools together Some of the kids already have to travel 50 miles to go to school and due to scarcity oE any kind of there is usually only one direction to travel Closing down of inefficiently small schools is not seen in the immediate future although Santana with 11 and with 13 makes the per pupil expenditure pretty high But due to their inaccessibility to other schools it would be very impractical to consolidate physical facilities The consolidation of the county schools is something that should have beo done a long time ago We believe that the money available for educating the kids should all be thrown into one pot and used where it is needed not only at the county level but the state level as well We certainly hope that Lopez is able to sell his idea to the 20 school districts so that the way is cleared for final approval by the State Board of Education be distributed to children
