Laredo Fire and Police chiefs to meet with the media and Find a way to resolve the debate over access to city scanner com at Mondays City Council meeting Were all oh the same side Salinas reminded the Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper raises funds for Habitat and orphanages fete by Cute Sates ABOVE Joe Covington enjoys his first serving of pancakes at the Shrove Tuesday dinner at the Unit ed Methodist Church ABOVE LEFT Traditionally cooks used up the last of the flour butter and sugar before Lent in cooking the Fat Tuesday meal such as pancakes LAREDO A mountain of pancakes were devoured Tuesday when hungry turned out for First United Methodist Churchs annual fundraiser The mens group toiled in the churchs kitchen long before diners started arriving The pancake supper took place on Shrove Tuesday the day before the Lent season begins The menu kept it traditional with nothing but pancakes with butter and syrup plus bacon sausage orange juice and coffee The supper reminded Juan Lopez who said he was a new member of the church of dinners held at his old church Every year is different hopefully well have enough pancakes for everybody that comes in Lopez said Pastor Peter M Aguilar said more than 100 people were expected to attend That was how many came last year when the church ran out of food he said Shrove Tuesday corresponds with Mardi Gras and the Methodist version traces its roots to Mid dle Ages Europe Back then Christians would make fatty foods to get rid of their rich foodstuffs like butter sug ar and flour before the onset of Lent supper where many kids enjoyed dripping goopy syrup on their stacks of flap jacks was a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity and two Nuevo Laredo orphanages The church suppers date back to at least 20 years ago said member Dennis P Annual Laredo International Fair and Exposition which will begin next week I really enjoy what I do and I love what I am doing he said I remember the LIFE organiza tion when it first started and I still think it is the most beautiful thing Not only for the economy of Laredo but for our youth he dont to be the Rancher of the Year to support the LIFE organization I love the outdoors I love the peo ple Mayers a former science and agricultural teacher is also the former vocational director for the Laredo Independent School District Im semiretired right now he said adding that he is still somewhat involved in the cattle business and though he already feels old he will continue to be involved for years to come Claudia Williams executive director of LIFE said Mayers was selected and honored as Ranch er of the Year because of his participation in LIKE activities and for having supported Laredos youth and promoting agriculture He is a strong LIFE supporter involved in Fu ture
