fuel spilled Thursday when a train collided with a truck in Aguilares leaving two people dead The truck was attempting to cross a set of railroad tracks be fore the train arrived said Eloy Vega a spokesman for the Laredo Fire Department Two men riding in the truck were pronounced dead at the scene Their identities had not been determined as of late Thurs day At about 4 pm the fire de sent a fire engine an ambulance and emergency per to assist Vega said The collision also opened a gash in the train engine spilling 5000 gallons of fuel at the site Vega said Crews from the Texas Mexican Railway Company worked to clean the area According to the New York State Department of Motor cles a train and a vehicle collide every 90 minutes nationwide Mo are 30 times more likely to die in an and the Laredo Trans Association have merged into Logistics Manu Association Port Lare do which held its first meeting Thursday The reasoning behind was to merge two organizations that have a lot of like interests By merging the two organizations we feel well get better coverage of the topics that concern the Port of Laredo said Tom Wade pres ident of the new association We wanted trans manufacturing and op of the port and of course logistics covers all of that Logis tics and Manufacturing seemed to be a great title The important part is we added Port Laredo as the identifier of what this group is Wade said Green publisher of the Laredo Morning Times and past president of the Laredo Manu Association said The merger of these two longtime Laredo trade groups allows their combined memberships to stand unified in the goal of im proving manufacturing storage and the movement of goods throughout Port Laredo and North America Roger Creery executive tor of the Laredo Development Foundation said the merger makes sense I think the merger of the two organizations strengthens both organizations There is strong synergy in the two and because we are so much of an interna tional trade community that com bines logistics functions with like manufacturing such as assembly and services the marriage of the two associations makes a lot of sense ft makes for a much stronger support at Noche Mexicana on Saturday night LULAC picked Salinas and Rodriguez because they wanted to show Laredo youth that they can achieve greatness even from humble beginnings The message is that through hard work edu cation and perseverance one can accomplish their dreams or goals Chapa said Salinas a relative of Mayor Raul Salinas was very emotional about getting the award She has received many acting awards in her career but the LULAC is the first award of its kind that she has received she said Snger during an far she was being 2007 Center Thursday
