consider lot landscaping By Peter Simek and Kristina Chesnutt Staff and Contributing Writers The City Plan Commission brought the proposed Lake Highlands WalMart Super center one step closer to com on Sept 22 approving a zoning change that will allow for a district to the area north of Forest Lane and west of Abrams Road Although passed the zon ing proposal is not ready to move on to the city council It will return to the planning commission on Sept 29 in order to approve an amend ment that specifies a land scape plan for the develop ment But landscaping is an portant issue for many Lake into Lake Highlands community centerpiece By Hannah Lodwick Special Contributor When Taylor Mokate and Chris Scott first thought of their final project for earning Eagle Scout distinction they planned to make some bench es for the chapel area at the Lake Highlands YMCA Then Taylors grandfather a career architect got involved We sent the plans to my grandfather up in Iowa and he sent them back with a lot of additions Mokate said He was ready to rebuild Noahs ark Soon the project turned into making a lectern benches a cross and a stage And Taylor and Chris realized they had much more on their hands than simple benches which was fine with Taylor who thought of the concept after noticing broken benches dur ing a summer camp there Me and Chris had started going to the Y and my sister had a summer camp there he said I noticed that the bench es they were using were bro ken and I didnt want her or IMOTO BOLD EAGLES Taylor Mokate and Chris Scott of Boy Scout Troop 473 seniors at Lake Highlands High School with their eagle scout project anyone to get hurt during camp Friends since elementary school Taylor and Chris joined Boy Scouts at a young age and progressed through the ranks under the watchful eye of ID Walker a former scout leader and their eagle advisor Maxwell Sanders Troop 473 committee chair also had a hand in helping the boys gain approval to complete the proj ect For Mr Walker the concept of the chapel fit perfectly with the purpose of completing an Eagle Scout project What I encourage our scouts to do is have a project that they can bring their sons to Mr Walker said We want this to be a lasting thing so that some day down the road his son will see it Many scout projects are funded by community dona tions and volunteer labor and the YMCA chapel was no Highlands apart ment complex of trying to profit from FEMA payments They say that the Apartments located at 6001 Skillman St took in evacuees and housed them in some of the most expensive units when it seemed that the federal gov would be footing the rent only to rum them out when FEMAs stipend was paid directly to individuals Mark Richman Timberlands lawyer said evacuees simply misunder stood the apartments offer which never implied that the evacuees could stay for free We a month to month lease for up to three months and waived applica tion fees and the deposit Mr SUPPORT with Octavia
