MAILED FROM ZIP CODE 75219 SOUTHWEST 2627 E YANDELL DR EL PASO TX 79903 I FRIDAY APRIL 29 ZOOS VOL 2 Council Race Focuses on Development Crime questions accuracy o ice statistics MEET THE CANDIDATES By Brace Felps Special Contributor Joseph Glogowski the chal lenger in the Dallas City Council District 10 race said the contest between himself and incumbent Blaydes isnt a personal conflict simply a difference in styles arid availability Mr Blaydes is probably a pretty good person Mr Glogowski said This is not a personal campaign I fight hard but I fight fair People need a choice between two different philosophies I can work My opponent cant He has a career Mr Glogowski a political consultant lives near the intersection of Greenville Avenue and Forest Lane He disputed statistics that show a reduction in the districts crime rates in the last year The chief David Kunkle is doing a great job he said But I have personal knowl edge the Northeast Division is playing games Occupation and not taking reports Dallas City Where theyre getting their Council figures idea member Mr Glogowski pointed to commercial recent examples of violent real estate crime in the area The owner broker See after Old Town restaurant closes By Bruce Marianos restaurant reopened April 11 behind familiar doors and the Dallas dining universe regained order The venerable restaurant took a nearly absence the local scene after the Martinez family lost the lease on its original space at Old Town Village Marianos occupied 5500 square leet at Old Town from 1971 until October 2003 Owners of Old Town opted to replace the locally owned restaurant with a national chain store Petsmart Mariano Martinez could have taken an early retirement and retreated to his home The founding force behind Marianos restaurant however decided he couldnt do with out the challenge of reestablishing the dining icon and morphing it into something slightly different This is what I love doing Mr Martinez said I love to conceptualize Negotiations for a new location began the month alter the old location closed according to Alexis Georgiadis a member of the Martinez family and business associate of Mr Martinez Marianos management reached a lease agreement with Dunhill Partners on a space at 6300 to be all you I needed was good I food and ice Now you need nac Mariano Martinez Founder of Marianos Road where Street connects with Abrams Road Some restaurant industry insiders and customers wondered if the Idea tion was a bad choice Mr Martinez said he wasnt overly concerned Ive been blessed with a kind of sixth sense he said When we opened at Old Town we were only the restaurant in Dallas Steak and Ale was probably Back then it was either small cafes or upscale restaurants with waiters hi tuxedos But we became a cat for Greenville Avenue because nothing much was there The same could be said of Frisco where Mr Martinez opened his other theme restaurant La Hacienda Ranch in 1991 That restaurants business grew along with the citys exploding population Other La Hacienda rants have followed Y The new Marianos called Marianos Hacienda combines menu items from the old and new restau rants fare the foundation of the original Marianos dominates the menu but like those from La Hacienda Ranch also appear on tables at the location The space inside and outi also com bines elements of the old and fireplace was built on ah outside side walk where overflow patrons or ban ished smokers can gather bright in the entrance way entertain ing experience Mr Martinez said Used to be all you needed was good food and good service he said Now thats a given but good See MARIANOS on Page Issues Aging multifamily housing citywide aging retail and scarcity of ty retail in District 10 crime rate and ble zoning Occupation Retired Political consult ant Age 57 Issues Pro proposal public safety reducing government waste through reforms Joseph Glogowski A Whack at TAKS PL II What exactly does the social studies test expect students to know Second in a series By dam Artery Senior Editor First a small diatribe The term social studies makes my neck hairs bristle Nobody English Language Arts another grimly name I realize that nowhere on that exam was literature treated as anything other than a way to teach a set of generic reading skills Social Studies could mean college High school teachers might instruct their students in many things but social studies is not one of them Obviously its a catchall phrase left over from a previ era when some educator somewhere thought that all studies of the social nature of human beings could be lumped under one term Really No one ever studied mans social nature more pro than Shakespeare or Dostoevski but no one would dream of categorizing them under social studies In fact as I reflect back on last weeks examination of mores in the mode of Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America Or perhaps it could describe the study of political principles such as the ones that impassioned John Adams and Alexander Hamilton But it doesnt not by a long shot In fact if the last two released tests for graders are a trustworthy guide then it means plain old history History teachers ought to complain that it isnt called history See TAKS on Page Advocates Stand up For Children CASA stresses need to aid abuse victims By Jessica Hoover Staff Writer Hope In
