School Finance Reform Following House approval of plans upper chamber seeks own solution to mcmey woes By Jessica Hoover Staff Writer Since the Texas House has wrapped up its proposals for school finance reform and state senators have started to debate the issue its clear that there are vast differences in opinions on what needs to be done The Committee Substitute for House 2 or allocates funding for schools by decreasing the state proper ty tax cap and placing a cent limit on what the state can recapture from school dis Supporters claim it would bring an additional billion into public schools next year House 3 which is contin gent on is an appropria tions that increases fran chise and cigarette taxes to bring money back to the state Both bills were passed in the Texas House two weeks ago and are moving to the Senate for approval Both have also caused senators to start ques how much businesses should be taxed who should carry the bulk of the tax bur den and whether the bills are adequate State Sen John Carona R Dallas said he is opposed to the bills business tax reforms I do not support and 3 in their current form said We need a serious reviews of all revenue sources builds mental skills friendships Staff Writer The words chess club may call to mind the figures of older men passing an afternoon in quiet repose their conquests now played out in a game Cast those assumptions aside Chess is hi fashion again and its newest converts are boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 The St Johns Episcopal Schools chess club offers these children an opportunity to take risks reason and match wits against opponents in a safe environment The chess club started sev eral years ago with the former chapel priest Father Donald Bender After the Rev Bender moved to Washington DC the schools janitors Omar and Rico took the helm This year the club is headed by a parent volunteer Randy Sperice whose daughter is a student at Saint Johns Mr Spence is passionate about chess and also started a club last year at Lakewood Elementary at his friends request Youve heard of the three Rs writing rith metic Chess is the fourth R reasoning Mr Spence said It lets the kids experience deci planning and the consequences of the decisions they make but in a safe environment The kids concur You have to look at what is going to happen and think about what your opponent is going to do said Nick Peterson It is pretty cool Andrew Frank said he likes playing with his school friends and his dad He started playing four years ago when his mother bought a computer program But chess club is about more than just the game John Noble 12 said hes made many friends and learned more than playing skills in chess club Meanwhile at another table best friends Aiden Earle 9 and Kyle Black also 9 discuss turns and Kyles persuasive ing to get Aiden in the club a month ago He joined and I taught him to play at school Kyle said He also taught Aiden the schol maneuver a four move Contributor Local dads and daughters are hats to don Not cowboy hats or berets rather HATS of a dif ferent kind as in High Adventure Treks for Dads and Daughters The organization offers adventure fifth girls and their dads while emphasizing relationship building Lake Highlands resident Kipp Murray founded HATS after a Scouting trip to New Mexico with his son during the summer of 1996 when he trip Longtime friend and neighbor David Kent was one of the first to join HATS teaches the girls a sense of self reliance and accomplishment Mr Kent said Now my daughter is a sophomore at Baylor University and when she needs a pep talk I say think back to HATS Nearly 10 years later HATS is still going strong with 121 participating pairs last year alone The daughter teams and they must be once the back wall of the church sanctuary Easter Marks New Beginning at LH Presbyterian Church New day care options part of major expansion Special Contributor After five years in the making members of Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church finally saw their dream become a reality and it happened just in time for Easter This dream was a renovation that added nearly 12400 square feet to the church Easter Sunday marked the first service held in the refurbished sanctuary The Rev Robert E Shelton pastor of the church said it was wonderful timing to have the first service on Easter It was fabulous
