Prompt Response of Fire men Is Credited With Saving Church From rious Damage Rapidity with which local men i cached the Methodist church eaily Wednesday with saving that fiom an almost certain disastrous conflagration The men got a of into a blazing in not much more I than two minutes after the sounded and put out the fne before it had climbed into the maze ot false ceilings partitions and old loois where the two parts of the church are joined The fne started in the casing of the door serving thc Sunday school section of the church when a blow torch used by Hartman Kaisei to melt ice from the dooi ignited straw carnei of- the casing by sparrows Mr tried to put out the flames by throwing snow on them but decided after a few moments that the blaze was getting away from him and called a passing motorist to turn in the alarm As thc church is just a block from the fire station both ers on the scene in a few moments and the fire around the casing was put out with a stream from the booster lank on one of engines Firemen then ered that smoke was still coming above the entry and after a short search found a through which they were able to get into a low attic over the church where they extinguished a small iire which had run up the of the brick veneered Firemen said that the manhole through which they reached the second-floor provided the only means of access hon of the churchy which js maze of old partitions old roofs and false floors Had this fire been able to get a few minutes more start it is doubtful they could have got enough to it to fight it ly and the whole
