MCKSON Tribune staff writer Jim Trobaugh may look to Marion for ideas on how to spearhead efforts in Kokomo h In a proposed reorganization of his City Hall Marion Mayor Ron Mowery created a new position called clean city director to over see efforts to improve the aesthet ics of the city Trobaugh who pledged during his campaign to give increased attention to making Kokomo more attractive clean city director is hierarchical ly equivalent to the citys building inspector and nuisance abatement manager on Marions organization al chart According to Michael Spyers who is to be Marions director of public works under the tion the clean city director is to serve as a coordinator for sanita tion and efforts The position calls for the tor to apply for grants operate the program where vol clean litter from road ways administer the program coordinate hazardous waste collection and work with other city departments to ensure that city ordinances covering aes thetics are enforced Such a position may well fit in with campaign pledges regarding beautification The Republican suggested at that time that he might appoint someone in city government to monitor utility companies and others who cut into Kokomos streets to make sure they are returned to their original condition and to make sure things such as ordinances are enforced Adding other duties could make sense he said after being told of Marions plan But Trobaugh is not inclined to create an entirely new position however at least not initially He said he would rather see if the responsibilities of existing posi tions can be positions Mfume as CEO Congressman will give up his seat to lead civil rights group WASHINGTON AP Rep Kweisi Mfume was chosen Satur day to head the NAACP after IS months during which the nations oldest civil rights organization became better known for contro than activism The Maryland Democrat who said he will leave Congress in mid February said his first order of business would be to address potential candidates for the position have blamed the board for scaring them away But Mfume said one of the condi tions he had demanded when he agreed to take the job was that he report tQ the boards autonomy Mfume said he would meet with Chairwoman Evers Williams this week to come up with a shortterm and longterm finan cial plan He said that plan would include reopening the stream of donations from corporate donors approach ing potential individual donors such as athletes and actors for sup port and trying to increase the ranks of the members Mfume said he hoped his deci sion to leave a Republi can budgets again and again and again until the health care pro gram is protected With a government shutdown deadline six days away the dent took aim at one of the widest gaps between the White House and Republicans the GOP plans for costs of the health care system for the poor and disabled My balanced budget plan trims Medicaid and keeps costs down It cuts federal spend ing lets
