champs take sweet By Tony Becca JAMAICA opened their bid to win the 1990 Red Stripe Cup competition in ular fashion with a thrilling victory over Trinidad and Tobago at Sabina Park in Kingston forcing the adjournment of several cases set for trial in the four Circuit Courts which were officially opened for the Hilary session They are protesting against what they say Is the ment's delay m dealing with their complaints of more than 10 years that because of the nature of their work they should be placed in a special grade Yesterday was the second time in two months that cases had to be put off because of industrial action at the courts In ber members of the Legal Staff Association went on a sick-out to force the Government to give them realistic salary increases and fringe fits They returned to work after the Minister of the Public Service assured them that an improved salary offer would be made to them Jurors who turned out in large numbers yesterday were advised by the judges to return to court today Court reporters are respon- sible for recording verbatim notes of the proceedings in court Their notes are official and are used in appeal cases There are only 15 court reporters out of a ment of 33 Low salary and de- working conditions are responsible for the mass tions of court reporters over the last three years Courts affected The courts affected are the Home Circuit Court for Kingston and St Andrew which has 88 cases listed for trial and the St Catherine Clarendon and St James Circuits Mr Justice Wolfe who presided in the Home Circuit Court asked what had happened to the court reporters Mr Lancelot Clarke Jnr Crown Counsel told him that Mrs Minette Shields Chief Court Reporter was the only one on the building Mr Karl Harrison ing of the Supreme Court told the that the others had not reported to work Mr Clarke told he judge that The Chief Justice had had words with Mrs Shields and he was trying to arrange an emergency meeting and Mrs Shields was trying to make contact with the other court reporters If they haVe taken industrial action the court should know If people have a grouse the public should know what the grouse Mr Justice Wolfe commented In the St James Circuit Court Mr Justice Gordon said that for too long court reporters were being classified as ries in the Civil Service No one appreciates the work they are doing It is only hoped that the issue will be resolved so that they can do their job in the arena of the Judge said Apologised In the Clarendon Circuit when Mr Justice Orr took his seat on the Bench he apologised to all concerned for the absence of the court reporters who he said play a key role in the courts he said we cannot proceed with the cases without the court reporters Mr Justice Orr said he was unaware of the problem but to lose three days on the heavy list of cases and that stoppage com- ing just after the late start at the last Circuit session in December last year could put us back In the St Catherine cuit Court Mr Justice Walker said he hoped that depending on a meeting between the Chief tice and the court reporters evening court could re- sume today However up to late yesterday
