superintendent for the Kerrville Independent School District said he doesnt regret the decision to cancel Thursdays classes Although some roadways had been cleared of ice school sidewalks and exterior walkways had patches of ice Thursday morning Kerr County Boards must now decide plan of action Safety always has to be first Trox ell said by phone from his office It really does Troxell said the driveway used by buses dropping off and picking up stu dents at Elementary and parts of Loop 534 the road leading to Tivy High School still were coated with ice Thursday morning Because schools were Troxell said Well go over See Schools page Motorists rescued from mountain Kerr County Icy road conditions left several stranded for hows including child By Alyson Chapman TIMES STAFF WRITER Kerr County Sheriffs deputies and Medina volunteer firefighters spent hours Wednesday night on a cold mountain trying to rescue at least four people including a child who were stuck in icy road conditions Kerr County Sheriff Rusty Hierholzer said the departments worked until Thursday mom ing to get the people down Medina Mountain on Texas 16 near the Kerr and Bandera Counry lines We had to use ropes to get them down he said Once they were down they were taken to Bandera to lodge for the night Early Thursday morning another vehicle got stuck on the mountain Low and behold this morning Thursday someone went around the barricades and got stuck Hierholzer said Cindy Martin of Bandera Emergency Manage ment said a man and two children were seen walking down the hill after their vehicle got stuck The Medina fire department went to pick them up and bring them back down she said Gilbert Davila maintenance assistance super visor of the Texas Department of Transportation office in Kerrville said Texas 16 was opened around 2 pm Thursday after his crews along with help from Bandera maintenance crews were able to bust away the ice from the roads Davila also said all other Kerr County roads were returning to normal Thurs day as businesses reopened trash collection resumed and the roadways were cleared of ice and snow that accu during the weeks winter storms City garbage routes that were canceled due to the weather resumed around noon Greg Rutherford gen eral manager for the San Antonio area division of Allied Waste said additional crews will run inside the municipal limits today and Saturday to catch up Rutherford said Allied Waste will work in the unin areas of the county once trash routes inside the city are caught up He suggested residents who live in rural parts of the county wait to put their trash out on their next reg ular collection day The issue that we have is the road conditions Were going to get the city caught up and then were going to start running in the coun ty Rutherford said Garbage collection routes were canceled Tuesday when ice and snow made travel too hazardous Charlie Hastings director of public works for the city said recycling cen ter also reopened Thursday and will be open regular See Normal page Shelter kept warm during Kerrville American Red Cross helped 80 stranded travelers By Alyson Chapman TIMES STAFF WRITER Greyhound bus passengers who were stranded in Kerrville since Tuesday hit the road about am Thursday bound for San Antonio The group of about 80 lodged at the American Red Cross emergency shelter after snow and ice closed Interstate 10 and forced them to detour to Kerrville We closed down the shelter just shortly after they left said Mary Haney emergency ser vices coordinator for the local Red Cross chapter We were glad we could be here to help them when they got stranded in Kerrville passengers road closures While at the shelter located at the First Presbyterian Churchs Family Life Center on Jefferson Street the group was able to keep itself entertained They were able to watch TV tand movies and we also provided them with card and board games to keep them busy she said There were also some pers for them to read Haney said the agency provided food cots and comfort kits includ ing necessary toiletries to the pas sengers The group had been on the bus for nearly five days when they got stuck in The Salvation Army emergency shelter on Hays Street took in about 25 people during the winter blast including some local homeless A Salvation Army representative said Thursday the shelter was closed but some people would be back when the shelter reopened at 5 pm to serve dinner
