due at tention at present Pittsburg fa to of JaS L at his home in Mount Pleasant Iowa formerly of this State where he figured quite prominently in State and national affairs says that he was a small the toggery of later fashions Judge Gillis when he died in Iowa the oilier day was eightynine years of age He was born at Hebron Washington county New York October 2 1792 He received a common school education and served an apprenticeship as a tanner In the last war with Great and served during the campaigns of 181314 a lieutenant by the Governor of New York he was taken prisoner by the British and transported to Halifax where he remained a prisoner of war until peace the following year He settled in Ontario county N and established himself as a farmer but he came to Pennsylvania as long ago MCray of Petroleum Centre he pur chased a farm near the scene of the sub sequent Bullion excitement and sank a well on it but as it afterwards proved just a little too far west for the He and H J Sayers founded Gas City on the headwaters of Hast Sandy where the pressure of gas was strong enough to furnish the motive power of engines without the aid of steam to which use he assisted in first putting it In company with J M Breden he leased the Eaton farm at what was afterwards Bredenburg or Driftwood near Frank lin There and then the first well was drilled in that spasmodic locality but though a fair producer was obtained it was not considered very much in those days and operations were suspended and others were destined afterwards to profit by his enterprise e give WOW for Au gust
