became the first Missouri governor to serve a second con full term Hearnes eyed the throng of 5090 persons gathered on the south side of Missouris majes tic Capitol and said I believe this state has awakened to the needs of edu cation highways health wel fare and the many other facets of government that require ad monies It requires self restraint not to attempt too much and yet It would be foolish and faint hearted to attempt too little said Democrat Hearnes took the oath of of fice at high noon from Judge Lawrence Holman chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court As Hearnes swore to uphold the United States and Missouri Constitutions a crashing salute echoed across the city Church bells pealed Preceding Hearnes inthe oath taking ceremony were Atty Gen John C the first Republican to win state office since 1940 and three other state officials Lt Gov William S Morris Secy of State James G Kirkpatrick and Treasurer William E Robinson For the first US Senators spoke at the cere mony Son Stuart Symington who announced he would file for this afternoon joined by youthful Sen Thomas F Eagleton Sen Symington said it is my sincere belief that the most credit should go to our able hardworking and dedicated E Sen Eagleton bade farewell to state service in remarks to the group gathered under bright sunny skies with the ter at 38 degrees Eagleton too had special praise for Hearnes saying he greatest sion of state government of any manI know An estimated 14000 persons jammed hotels and motels to be on hand for the solemn ceremony I begin Hearnes said with absolutely no pledge kind to prevent me from the people state with with you or myself if not say would Cleaving of in the good graces citi zens However believe it is a leader of nation pop I realize the full responsibility which it involves With the statue of Thomas Jefferson peering over his shoulder Hearnes said We are not faced with a petty struggle for political ad vantage Democrat against Republican liberal against conservative or progressive against ques tion we face is shall be satisfied to keep pace or whether we want to move sharply ahead Compared with many states in the nation Missouri could rest a while on her achieve ments Yet we know within our hearts that we can do better To doand to be tetter is the ambition that has made Amer ica great said the legislature during his first term achieved a record of performance un matched in our states history and perhaps unequaled in any other stale of the Union He did not attempt to review his record saying it speaks for itself and will be of increas ing influence as the years go by And for those four years I thank God for His guidance and the people of our state for their approval With a touch of emotion in his voice Hearnes concluded his speech by saying pray God that I may be given thr wisdom and prudence to do niy duty After watching the unusual parade of II bands and many military units from a reviewing stand on the north side of the Capitol tin dignitaries moved to the South slops for the color The colonels and other visi tors sat in thousands of wooden folding chain provided by the University of Missouri When the ceremonies before a joint outdoor session of the legislature were over the hon orary colonels were bused to the National Guard Armory for lunch Their wives ate at Sel inger Centre in the Catholic parade in Jefferson City today under clear skies but chilly 35 de gree temperatures Countless others watched around the state on a regional television network fed by color cameras of of St Louis Eleven bands and 12 march Ing units including four contin gents of honorary colonels step ped off promptly at 10 am behind Jim Low and Bob Hart man drum majors of the Jeff erson City Senior High School Band Majorettes of the Senior High Band which followed behind massed colors of the Missouri National Guard wore special Uncle Sam costumes for the parade Immediately behind the colors and the Senior High Band were Gov and Mrs Hearnes in an open car as were all ies Next came Lt Gov and Mrs W E Morris and their chil dren Secretary of State and Mrs James Kirkpatrick and their grandchildren State Audi tor and Mrs Haskell Holman State Treasurer and Mrs Wil liam Robinson Atty Gen and Mrs John Danforth and their children U S Senator and Mrs Stuart Symington U S Senator and Mrs Thomas Eagleton and Misses Lynn Julie B Hearnes The 12 block parade took 51 minutes to pass the reviewing stand on the north side of the State Capitol As the first unit passed in review the Missouri Military Academy Fusileers the final unit in the parade was still waiting to begin near the Governors Mansion In high spirits the Honorary Colonels talked freely with each other and with parade watchers along the route Dignitaries led by Gov and Mrs Warren E Hearnes left their automobiles and mounted the reviewing stand to watch the parade As the first unit of Honorary Colonels approached the re viewing stand Gov Hearnes proclaimed Here come the Gomer Pyles It was obvious the Colonels were not experienced marchers and it was also obvious they cared very little out of step but me one Colonel cracked One high school band from Chaffee played music known to modern day television viewers as the Teaberry Chewing Gum Shuffle and broke into the spritely shuffle as they passed in review The MMA Fusileers and bands from MMA and Went worth Military Academy ap to be the most disci and were among popular favorites for their military bear ing Units which traveled to Jeff erson City specifically for the 1969 The official party and many of Hearnes honorary colonels also attended the serv ice conducted at the First Baptist Church Dr Thomas S Field president of the Missouri Baptist Convention and pastor of the First Baptist Church of Springfield de livered the sermon Let Freedom Ring Dr Field said before beginning his ad dress I am deeply appreciative of the in to participate in this hour of wor ship which inaugurates one of the truly great days in the annals of Missouri Certainly as we contemplate the over whelming vote of confidence which was given our governor during the recent elec tion he can readily be expected to accept it as a mandate from the people of Missouri for the next four years Dr Field called for a crusade to keep America strong through reemphasis of great moral and spiritual verities upon which America and our beloved State of Missouri are founded The opening paragraphs of the Official Manual of the State of Missouri tell of Missouri being the gateway for pioneers pushing back the nations frontier Now a century and a half later Dr Field continued new American pioneers are crossing the frontier of space and Mis souri craftmen are in the very center of this endeavor It all actually serves to point up how closely tied to the trends and tendencies of America this middle state of Missouri real ly is Dr Fields said It is possible that Mis souri led by a Chief Executive
