Associated Press Writer HELENA Mont The mountain shack of Unabomber suspect Theo dore Kaczynski resembled a well stocked high school chemistry lab with all the ingredients needed to create explosives chemistry ex perts said The materials would allow some one to create blocks of gunpowder laced with a material that creates a hot violent explosion when confined in a small package said Ed Keller a 28year member of the University of Montana chemistry department He certainly had the stuff that will Keller said after re viewing a list of chemicals seized in a search of home Besides the chemicals the FBI found two bombs the addresses of corporate executives maps of San Francisco bus schedules guns and a bottle of antidepressant medicine according to a 34page inventory released Monday by a federal judge The references to San Francisco and to corporate executives were cryptic and the corporate officials were not identified However the references may be significant be cause the Unabomber who raged against modern technology target ed executives Three of the bombings occurred in the San Francisco Bay area and two in Sacramento Five of the bombs were mailed from northern Califor Composite sketch of suspected Unabomber nia including two from Oakland and one from San Francisco The FBI inventory also confirmed published reports of three ers found in the cabin as well as numerous AP Photo FDA approves combination to treat ulcers By STEVE SAKSON AP Business Writer NEW YORK A decision by the Food and Drug Administration could change the way ulcers are treated in this country The FDA on Monday approved a combination that for the first time promises to cure stomach ulcers and keep them from coming back That would free millions of sufferers from years of drug therapy and relapses Astra Merck Inc will be allowed to sell its existing ulcer drug Prilosec in conjunction with an antibiotic called made by Abbott Laboratories In endorsing the combination the FDA acknowledged the pioneering research of Dr Barry J Marshall who showed in 1983 that a bacterium called H pylori causes ulcers In doing so Marshall challenged half a century of belief that ulcers were caused by stress and too much stomach acid H pylori affects six of 10 Americans although not all of them experience any illness It is blamed for 80 percent of the million ulcers diagnosed every year Scientists believe that the H pylori bacteria weakens the stomach lining allowing acid to create the sores or lesions that cause the burning pain so familiar to ulcer sufferers Even now many doctors treat ulcers with drugs that have to be taken for years to prevent the ulcer from coming back Under the new regimen patients will take Prilosec and for 14 days then continue to take Prilosec for an additional 13 days The Prilosec abates the acid so the can kill the bacteria The high stomach acid found in most ulcer patients can break down the antibiotic if it is taken alone explained Dr Robert Temple the medical policy chief Potential side effects of the drug combina tion include nausea headaches and problems tasting food Tests showed that the combination healed almost 90 percent of ulcers and eradicated the H pylori infection 64 percent of the time Six months later up to 52 percent of the patients remained ulcer free Other drug companies are also hoping for fast approval of similar drug regimens Glaxo Wellcome PLC the British drug company that makes the ulcer drug Zantac plans to com bine it with a more potent version of the chemical found in Pepto Bismol into a new product called
