in Blairsville Home Funeral services for David Harbi son aged 84 years whose death oc curred in the hospital department of Indiana County Homo Monday morning at 8 oclock will be conduct ed in the Church Wed afternoon at 2 oclock by the Rev Dr Frederick W Hinitt Death was caused by the infirmities inci dent to old age The deceased leaves a A T Harbison of Grand Mich Burial will be made in Oakland Cemetery Mrs Alary Hogan Dec Mary Hogan aged years died yester day morning at the home of her son John J IHogan in fol lowing a short illness The deceased was born in Ireland and had resided in Western vania for the past 58 years She was a of SS Simon and Judes Roman Catholic Church Blairsville Her husband the late John Hogan died in 1883 The deceased is survived by two sons Patrick Hogan of Barnesboro and John J Hogan of Twelve grandchildren andone great grand child also survive Funeral services will be conducted in SS Simon and Judes Roman Cath Church at 8 oclock tomorrow Following the services the funeral cortege will leave for Wells boro Tioga county where interment will be made Thursday morning Continued on Page 2 DRIVE UNDER WAY Pittsburgh Synod Seeks for Minis terial Endowment A special session of the Pittsburgh synod of the Evangelical Lutheran has been called for this af at the First Lutheran church Pittsburgh by the president of the synod the Rev Ellis B D The purpose of the session in cludes the preparation for the drive of the United Lutheran Church for a ministerial pension en fund The year 1928 has been set aside in the church since 1920 for the year in which the drive is to be made and other matters have been cleared out of the way that there may be nothing to interfere with the progress of this campaign Up to now the pensions in the Lutheran church have been but small and hardly adequate They have been paid out of the annual budget of the church This burden has made the to the individ ual congregations rather large and has taken funds that might have been put to equally worthy ends in the program of the church The endeavor wiLl be made to put this matter on an endowment basis to supply an adequate pension for superannuated ministers of the church and for needy widows and orphans of church pastors A fund of at first was proposed but thru the efforts of the laymen of the church tho goal has been placed at 2 DEAD AS TUB OF GAS EXPLODES YONKERS N Dec Christian Grandquist 40 was burned to death and her husband Aaron was dying today from injuries received when a of gasoline exploded in the kitchen of their home John Pignato 20 a roomer in the home poured ten gallons of gasoline into a tub in the kitchen preparatory to cleaning an overcoat When he left the to get the coat the gasoline fumes drifted over to the coal stove and a blast President had supported a subsidy for American railroads a direct subsidy for shipowners indi rect through the tariff for manufacturers and had put the government into the banking business through the federal reserve system After failing to oppose these measures for other groups the Pres ident denounces their use to aid agri Brookhart said his recom for relief are wholly in adequate He has promised Musical Program Leads to News of Operetta Which Kiwanians Will Offer Rotarians Hear European Sidelights PROGRAM DAVID EVANS SERIOUSLY HURT DECEMBER David 0 Evans of Church street an employe in Planing Mill was seriously injured when he lost one finger and had two others severely cut on his right hand about 11 oclock yesterday morning Mr Evans was cutting lumber with a ripsaw when his hand slipped ami was caught by the saw Several years ago Mr Evans lost two fingers of his left hand in about the same manner His condition is reported tobe good this morning COURT BEGINS The Kiwanis Club had a very good meeting Monday night despite the fact that the attendance was not quite as high as usual due to the fact that a number of members of the club are hunting for big game are Allison Harry Herlinger and Dr A II Stewart v As part of the musical program in charge of Gilbert Wollenden Profes sor Sullivan of Pittsburgh gave the club a very clear idea of the operetta which is to be put on Rooming House Burns WILLIAMSON W Dec people including two women and three children died in a rooming house fire in the downtown section here early today The dead Albert Ireson 49 Robert Ireson 40 John L Marcum 33 Mrs Willie 38 and her three children aged six years three years and six weeks and Mrs Mrs Brown ing 20 The names of the three children and the cause of the fire could not be determined immediately after the tragedy The building a brick structure was in flames before any attempts to extinguish it could be made The lower part of it was occupied by a cafeteria and a negro porter was deported to have been fa tally burned A number of the victims were con with the Wellman murder trial now in progress here Elijah Well man his three sons and another rela tive Willie Dingess are CASTLE Dec Many New Castle homes were shaken a trestle was ruined and damage es at was done here when an explosion caused by what police said was at least 50 sticks of dyna mite rocked this section during the night The charge was placed under the trestle nt the big fill being con by the Valley Im provement Company near the New Castle Junction Buildings in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad offices were shattered by the force of the explosion For move than an hour after the blast it was impossible to determine the source and a general alarm was turned in After a long search the blast was found to have been in the slag fill about a half mile from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad offices Police said the sticks had been placed in the till by persons who op posed the filling in of low lying slipped on a rail and fell directly in front of a passenger train in charge of Engineer J G Conduc tor Andrew Baird both of Cresson His head was crushed and his body was badly mangled Paul Bratton was a son of Ellis E and A Bratton and was born Feb 16 1904 in Coalport He and Miss Gertrude M Jones of Gallitzin were married Jan 12 1926 The de ceased had been employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co as a loco motive hostler at Vintondale for sev eral years and was enroute from the hostlers shanty to the sta tion when he met his death Surviving are his his widow a daughter Mary Elizabeth anu lour morning at oclock and the body will be taken to Clearfield county for interment IN BIG INCREASE Dec the construction season virtually at an end the department of highways to day announced approximately 7S5 miles of highway added this year to the state system the third largest program in department history Of this 536 miles was new of the permanent type under contract The remainder was planning to call separate conference between miners and operators in an effort to settle the soft coal strike These states have been hardest hit by the which began last April Until advised of the N Dec after the defense had rested its case in tho murder trial today the prosecution created a furore of ex in the court room which as a bombshell to the case when Harry S Sanderson the States witness was recalled to the stand and positively identified Wil lis Beach codefendant with Margaret Lilliendahl as the man he saw running away from the murder scone on September IB Sandersons troit and Kansas City FEATURE NOTES BY GEORGE R HOLMES INS Staff WASHINGTON Dec can harmony which has been more of a theory than a condition anyway sustained a jarring shock today the Republican National Committee met to select a 1928 convention city and make other decisions affecting the forthcoming campaign The goodnatured rivalry that has existed between the various cities notably San Francisco Detroit and Kansas City the three principal con tenders disappeared overnight and when the committee assembled this morning theie were chips on a good many shoulders A terrific row has been kicked up over the efforts of William M But ler President Coolidges personally selected chairman of the committee to send the convention to Kansas City His activities on behalf of Kansas City Avere keenly resented by Far Western members of the commit tee who already have a third of the committee pledged for San Francisco and there no less resentment Detroiters who have sent their to Washington to impress upon the committee how bad ly Michigan wants the convention Butler gave no reason for his ac in behalf of Kansas City other than to say he felt the best interests of the party would be served toy taking the convention there He disclaimed to speak for the White House as President Coolidge had previously informed inquirers that it was a matter of indifference to him where the
