Township Afflicted with the Disease Yes Afternoon Four Indiana Physicians Concur in the Diagnosis Reached Flome Is Un der Strict Quarantine 790 CASES ARE REPORTED IN THE STATE The dreaded Infantile malady has reached this Only last evening the Evening Gazette reproduced a map ol the state showing the spread of the disease and Indiana was one of the few counties that was given a clear field The little victim is Luella Pearl Spencer the daughter of Mrs Jennie Spencer of White township who has become afflicted with scourge while staying in the home of her uncle W H Martin oh the East Pike The little girl had been staying for the last 10 weeks in the Home Mentch of White and on Tuesday morn ing it was discovered that the little girl was seriously ill and that her legs paralyzed Later the child was brought to the offices of Dr H B Neal on North street The physician was of the opinion that the child had been afflicted with the mal ady but to make sure that his diagnosis was correct he surpT a number of his medical brothers Drs George E Simp son W D Gates Fred St Glair and W A Simpson the latter be ing the Indiana County representative of the State Health De The consulting physicians bore out in every detail the diagnosis of Dr Neal The little girl was quickly removed to the Martin which was placed under a strict quarantine last even ing the State Health Department being notified of the case here While at the Mentch home a and a child were exposed to the disease and at the Martin home a 10year old boy was exposed to the disease Mrs Martin has been spending a week in the home of her son and consequently will be barred from her own home Mr Martin is occupying quarters in an out house on his farm while two girls of the Martin home are quarantined with the afflicted youngster A rigid investigation disclosed the fact that the little girl had not been exposed to any case of the disease and this but again em the theory that the disease is not contagious or even in but its visitation is of a mysterious origin Miss Carrie Hensel one of the State Dispensary nurses was paying her weekly visit to Indiana yesterday when she was in formed of thq case of infantile paralysis She immediately went to the Martin home with a supply of sanitary napkins drinking cups and explained in detail the means to be used to prevent the spread of the disease if such a thing is possible At least four children in Indiana at different times in the past have been afflicted with the paralysis and in not one instance did any children who were exposed to the case take the re closed them until September 18 Dr Dixon issued the following state nent The department of healths deci sion on the closing of the schools was to prevent the spreading of infan tile paralysis in our state and spare the lives of our little children Be fore deciding this question experienced our state were consulted and it was inade clear that our school system In public anil a beautiful piece of
