Housed in a tempo rary Walters runs signs through a By DIANE HAYS DAILY NEWS TT Torkers have picked up the pace at 3000 Sternberg Drive this But none is w moving faster than Greg exhibits director at Fort Hays State new Sternberg Museum of Natural is working overtime as the staff prepares for this weekends grand open But Walters is doing more than just putting the final touches on The past he has been working 15 hours a day in an effort to have ike exhibits The followed by others Saturday and the first preview tours of the limited to Thursday Walters isnt sure he is even going to bother going to Come 6 or 7 he says hell probably still be running around the museum attending to Anyone close to Walters will tell you that he always moves a little faster than the average guy You have to step it up to keep up with said Jerry museum director at Choate and others have been trying to keep up with Walters since he set foot on the FHSU campus in December Walters came to Hays from graduate school at the University of Iowa looking for his first fulltime job in his profession and hoping for a challenge He found both Walters was in the process of making plans to renovate McCartney the home of Sternberg when Choate informed him one day in late 1991 to switch I told him we had a bigger place for the Choate It didnt seem to bother He just jumped right Walters was the first employee to move to the museums new location near 27th and Canterbury full setting up shop in the southwest corner of the building in late with Walters often working is where the transformation of the exhibits tof the Walters also is responsible for the graphics and the story lines that support the Im not sure the workmen wanted him there at Choate said in reference to the construction But he had to be on site in order to do his job Walters began working with the construc tion crews on designing the cabinets and other areas for the Kind of a cooperative he After a Choate Walters became a fixture at the so much so that Choate said he doesnt know what they would have done without Not to diminish what anyone else has meant to this because there are a lot of people who have contributed to Choate but if I was placed in a position where I had to recognize someone who was the single most irreplaceable hes the Any one of us could have been replaced without it severely hurting the but not If Walters would have been replaced it would have been a year before we would have Thats how important he is to this Choate said that although Walters came highly recommended from a colleague at the University of FHSU had no idea what they had landed when they chose Walters over several other applicants for the job of exhibits preparator and When we hired he was still wet behind the Choate said of who named exhibits director about a year Sessional who has done in a very short time what most people in his profession only dream Choate said that FHSU learned quickly that we had hired us a good pointing to two significant milestones in the museum One was when FHSU decided to renegotiate its contract for designing the exhibits with Deaton Museum Services of responsible for the artwork in the also was contracted for exhibit After FHSU decided to take over that aspect of the it purchased a large format printer and laminator as well as an upgraded computer and accompanying That meant Greg had a lot more work to Choate but it also meant we had this equipment as our Another major design that Walters had a hand in was that of the Discovery an educational handson We formed a committee that had two or three meetings and Walters sat in and lis tened to all of us flap our jaws what we want ed to do with the discovery Choate I guess he got tired of listening to After one of the meetings he went to work and the next meeting showed up with a complete archi I remember looking at that thing and say Thats What the Discovery Room is today was designed by Choate thinks Walters is best at I think hes at his peak when hes planning the to design Choate Hes an exhibit and a darned good Walters admits design is one of his favorite parts of the job but says he also likes the oper ations I really like it I like being a Walters Here the staff is small enough you get to do a lot of Thats why designing the exhibits inhouse really You can change things along the way if you need There are modifications we make all the way up to While Walters is feeling the pressure of get ting done on Choate said he thinks Walters will be happy with the end This is simply an amazing but I think he is working so hard right now that he doesnt realize Choate One day hes going to be able to sit back and say Wow Look what I TOUR LEADERS ARE STILL NEEDED Tour leaders are still needed for the grand opening of the
