Levi supervisor of textiles who has a twisted arm Miss Amelia Curl man ager of the Martinsburg W Va store whose growth has been retarded Mrs Dorothy Beyer manager of the Han cock store who suffers from a bad ankle and Miss Margaret Montgomery manager of the Waynesboro Pa store who suffers from a bad leg In discussing the recent case of a magazine salesman who falsely represented himself to local residents as having the en of Mayor Burhans Police Chief Blair Overtoil re lated mother episode which il lustrates how unscrupulous some people can be This case involved t crew of itinerant magazine salesmen who operated in Hagerstown for a few days Among the solici tors was a youth from Scranton whose sales had not been up to what the crew manager thought they should be When the group completed its work in Hagerstown the crew leader moved on to the next community on his itinerary with all the members of his force except the ltd who was deficient in sales He was left stranded in town with no car and without funds to buy a bus ticket back home or even to buy a meal The po lice chief reported that he had to provide meals and lodging for the youth and make arrange ments with a relative in Penn sylvania to come here and re turn him to his home Twentytwo different spe cies of birds were spotted by the Frederick Bird Club on a recent hike down the canal towpath from to Brunswick Most of us who do not get far away from the home hearth are lucky to see half dozen different kinds of birds in our yards Among the species seen by the bird club were several kinds of ducks on the river a hermit thrush kingfishers white throated sparrows Hermit thrushes migrate south in the winter from their grounds north as far as Labrador and Manitoba and are not uncommon here In the of the inventory tax as it applies to industry it would seem that those interested in bringing new industries to the county would see to it that we do not have other disadvantages that frighten away new indus tries It has been authoritative ly stated that we lost one sub stantial industry to nearby Berkeley County W Va due to the inventory tax and that an other big one still undecided about a site to locale in this area was also frightened away by the inventory tax We have two adjacent states bidding for new industries What advantages do these two and West over this coun ty About the easiest and quick est means of finding out be to consult our local Public Accountant firms who can tell us what advantages Wesl Virginia and Pennsylvania offer to new industry which we don have Then let us correct our disadvantages These local have industrial clients in these two states as well as in this county Despite the considerable amount of conservation work on farms throughout Washing ton a mountain by a vicious snow storm Youd do as thousands have done in Western moun tains You would seek shelter and just then you would sweat it out wait ing for highway crews to clear the roads The storm hit Thursday night Strong winds whin the snow into drifts By early yesterday morning so many buses trucks and cars were stalled on the Penn sylvania Turnpike that nothing could even the snow removal equipment Police closed a stretch of the toll road from Irwin Pa to Carlisle Pa Drivers who tried to get out of the area on other roads found their paths blocked by snow Mo quickly filled the motels along the toll road Others not as lucky jammed into the turnpike restaurants They were stranded there Some are asleep at the counters said Doris Gunger 28 a waitress at the Somerset Turn ike and 12 fair and frosty Heavy Snow Drifts To Blame Bitter Cold BY ASSOCIATED PRESS A rescue team today reached 40 to 50 care stranded for almost 12 hours in heavy snow drifts and weather on JS Route 40 near Frost burg in Western Maryland A State Police rescue team and State Roads Commission crews using a huge rotary plow reached the motorists after all of the cars had run out of gasoline The passengers were taken to a motel near Frostburg All ap to be in good condition despite the intense cold and high winds The Salvation Army brought blankets and food to the motel The State Police rescue team was led by Lt WE OHara com mander of the LaVale barracks Capt Carl DUlinger of Troop B and Sgt Robert Basore of the rederick barracks The cars became stuck about five miles west of Frostburg near the County line at 9 oclock last night Two troopers managed to reach the cars despite heavy drifts and spent the night with the motorists until the rescue team arrived State Police estimated 80 per sons including at least one baby were marooned in about 40 cars Lt Richard Sarver 25 of Mor W Va s soldier sta Joned at Ft Meade was driving nome with his wife and old baby Richard Jr when they became stalled Sarver said the cars became snowbound when they tried to pass a stalled snow plow on a hill His car was second in line The soldier said there was no food problem because of a few restaurants plant The label mill which burned down last October should be re built and in operation at a new location by spring company of predicted this morning They issued the following statement Holland Woven Label Inc has just taken title to new prop erty in Williamsport and has signed a contract with C Wil iam Hetzer Inc for the erec ion of a new modern The company is expecting plant to stall new equipment and hopes to be in operation again in the The company is very of all of the help extend ed by the town of Williamsport joth in respect to temporary lousing after its plant was eom destroyed by fire last October and in respect to the lelp which is being given in getting started again The building is being finan ed partially by mortgage loans rom the Washington County National Bank and
