B8 Lay ready to tackle GASD curriculum BY JESS HAINES Times Staff Writer With only two weeks on the job, Dr. Christine Lay says she’s already deeply engrossed in learning about the needs of the Gettysburg Area School District ( GASD) and students in Adams County. “ I fi nd myself to be incredibly curious and ask a lot of questions,” said Lay, who took over as the district’s assistant superintendent on Jan. 2. A Boiling Springs resident, Lay, 46, comes to the district from Central Dauphin School District, where she served as Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Her role at GASD encompasses many of the same duties. “ It’s an interesting place to be, particularly in the middle of a school year,” said Lay of her transition. “ I don’t want to overwhelm everyone.” Lay related in an interview this week that she has spent the early part of January talking to GASD teachers about their needs and possible curriculum or assessment revisions for the future. An experienced educator, Lay graduated from Carlisle High School, and earned her undergraduate degree from Shippensburg University in 1988. She then spent the fi rst third of her career in public schools in Virginia, fi rst as a teacher and then as a principal, earning her master’s degree in school leadership from George Mason University in 1993. In 1999, she says, she and her husband decided to move back to Central Pennsylvania, where she became fi rst a principal at Central Dauphin, and then took over her most recent position as Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. She was with the district for 12.5 years, and during that time earned her doctorate at Widener University. She related she completed her dissertation on standards falling under a model known as response to instruction and intervention ( RTII). “ It’s a universal service delivery model, meeting needs of all students,” Lay said of the comprehensive school improvement standards. “ It’s exciting to come to a district that’s building that framework.” B ILL S CHWARTZ / G ETTYSBURG T IMES Dr. Christine Lay recently became the Gettysburg Area School District assistant superintendent, taking over for now- Superintendent Larry Redding. BY JARRAD HEDES Times Staff Writer An $ 11,896.29 judgement was entered in Adams County Court on Tuesday in favor of the Selective Insurance Company of America and the Borough of Gettysburg in their civil lawsuit against a Gettysburg couple for “ failing to keep their stairway clean, inspect their stairway for debris and warn guests of tripping hazards on the stairway” inside their home at 250 E. Middle Street. The amount Ronald and Tammy Carstetter will be ordered to pay is the exact same as what the police department’s New Jerseybased insurance company paid out for Kevin Wilson’s medical treatment and lost wages after he fell down the couple’s steps while responding to a call. The lawsuit was fi led in Adams County Court in late August 2011, around 10 months after Wilson responded to a “ domestic situation” at the Carstetter residence on Oct. 25, 2010. While descending the stairs leading from the second fl oor, according to the lawsuit, Wilson tripped and fell over numerous bags and items of debris on the stairs. Wilson reportedly suffered serious injuries and missed the next several months of work. The Carstetters contended since Wilson was on duty, his injuries should have been covered by worker’s compensation. Wilson would not comment on the case and Gettysburg Borough Manager Florence Ford indicated the suit was initiated by the police department’s insurance company. Pa. Rep. Perry to run for Platts’ seat BY ALEX J. HAYES Times Night Editor State Rep. Scott Perry has always wanted to serve in the United States Congress, and he hopes Rep. Todd Platts’ decision to not seek re- election will give him that opportunity. Perry, a York County Republican, con fi rmed by phone late Thursday that he will seek the Republican nomination for representative for District 4, which is currently District 19. “ I am very concerned about the direction this country is taking. We borrow and spend way too much,” said Perry. Perry, a Dillsburg resident, joined the state House of Representatives fi ve years ago. He previously owned and operated Hydrotech Mechanical Services Inc. since 1993. Platts’ announcement on Tuesday was not only a surprise, but relatively late in the election cycle. Hopeful candidates can begin circulating petitions on Jan. 24 and must have them fi led with the 1,000 necessary signatures by Feb. 14. The primary election is April 24. Perry said he discussed the possibility of running with his wife, Carolyn, and daughters, Ryenn and Mattea, shortly after Platts made his announcement. He added that his family’s support was “ the most important thing” and believes the change is “ important to our children’s future.” Rep. Scott Perry Another tragedy saddens New Oxford community BY MARK WALTERS Times Staff Writer With the New Oxford Square fl ag fl ying at half- staff late Thursday afternoon, the eastern Adams County community continued to mourn the loss of one of its own roughly 24 hours after the death of a volunteer fi re fi ghter who perished in the line of duty. Brandon Lee Little, 19, of Abbottstown, was killed Wednesday night responding to a garage fi re in Hamilton Township when he lost control of his vehicle on Kineman Road, just southeast of Abbottstown. According to Eastern Adams Regional Police Chief Robert Then, speed may have been a factor in the one- vehicle accident and Little was not wearing his seatbelt.
