More than 50 law enforcement officers from nearly every police force in Adams County, along with units from Maryland, the State of Pennsylvania, the U. S. Marshal’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation invested nearly four hours flushing out suspect Alexander Cruz, 32, York, who is believed to have jacked a vehicle in York County before traveling to Gettysburg and robbing the PNC at 245 Breckenridge St. Police said Cruz left the scene of the robbery in a Hyundai Sonata, which he crashed a short time later when the vehicle traveled off the road near the Highland ( See COOPERATION on Page A5 D ARRYL W HEELER / G ETTYSBURG T IMES ( Above) Fourteen- monthold Lydia Fair of Hanover enjoys a spoonful of vanilla ice cream at the Alpha Fire Company carnival in Littlestown on Wednesday. Kelli Murphy, hired last month, is the new high school assistant principal, replacing Kevin Mauro. She comes to Bermudian with a background in instructional technology and educational services and said she is excited to use that knowledge in her new position to help boost student achievement. She previously worked as an instructional technology coordinator at Gettysburg Area School District. Another new face, Bermudian alumnus Ryan Lehr of East Berlin, a graduate of Millersville University, will be seen as industrial arts teacher, replacing Isaac Frazier. Gettysburg Borough Hall renovations to begin in a few weeks BY SCOT ANDREW PITZER Times Staff Writer The planned renovation of Gettysburg Borough Hall has come in under budget by about $ 500,000, according to a $ 1.65 million bid package awarded by Borough Council this week. Original estimates were valued at about $ 2.1 million, but officials noted that the borough benefitted from the favorable economic climate, as well as an energy grant to help underwrite the 59 East High Street project. “ That’s what we’ve been saying since the beginning, that we’d probably come in under budget,” explained Councilman Bob Krummerich, chairman of the board’s finance committee. The nine- member council, missing two members, voted unanimously Monday night to award the building renovation contracts to the “ lowest responsible bidders,” including McCoy Brothers of Carlisle as the general contractor ($ 780,200). There were 12 bids received, for general, electrical, HVAC and plumbing work. “ It’s below budget, so that’s good,” said Architecture Workshop consultant Jill Rohrbaugh, who worked with the borough over the past year in studying the project. Bids were opened Friday, and contracts were awarded this week to Hull’s Electric ($ 436,000), Walton & Company for HVAC ($ 368,100), and Carl Franz Plumbing ($ 68,000). Rohrbaugh reminded council that the borough received a $ 250,000 energy grant for the project, and confiscated FBI money ( about $ 100,000) to offset police department renovations. Rohrbaugh touted the experience of McCoy Brothers as a general contractor, noting that the firm has performed other major projects in Gettysburg, such as the Wills House, ( See RENOVATIONS on Page A3) ‘ You guys have no idea what you’re spending money on.’ — Stan Clark, Gettysburg D ARRYL W HEELER / G ETTYSBURG T IMES STROLL — Pam Plummer of Gettysburg enjoys a walk along East Confederate Avenue with her daughter Jill. BY JENNIFER LOVEN AP White House Correspondent WASHINGTON ( AP) — White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday he might have said things differently when he lashed out at liberals he called the “ professional left” and suggested some of them should be drug tested. But he told his daily White House briefing that he’s certainly not leaving his job over the remark, as at least one Democratic congressman has suggested. And he stuck to his line that President Barack Obama has accomplished or made great strides on key goals and promises despite criticism from some liberals that he has not done enough. Gibbs found himself in hot water with some liberals after his remarks in an interview with The Hill newspaper. The spokesman said that liberals who likened Obama to former President George W. Bush on many policies should be “ drug tested.” One Democratic congressman, Minnesota’s Keith Ellison, suggested Gibbs resign. Asked if he regretted his choice of words, Gibbs said, “ many times I could have said thing slightly differently.” But, he added with a chuckle, “ There’s no truth to the rumor that I’ve added an inflatable exit to my office.” It was a reference to JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater, who became angry at a passenger, cursed the passenger out over the plane’s loudspeaker on Monday and then slid down the inflatable emergency slide to the tarmac at New York’s Kennedy Airport. Gibbs said he hasn’t talked to Obama directly about his choice of words, which he called “ born out of frustration.” He said that many of Obama’s campaign promises, led by the sweeping health care overhaul, have been brought to fruition, and suggested that “ those are accomplishments that we all should be proud of, regardless of whether it encompasses 100 percent of what we had wanted in the beginning.” In the interview in which he dubbed some liberals the ( See GIBBS on Page A3) Suggesting liberals should be ‘ drug tested’ not the best idea, Gibbs admits Plenty of changes for Warrior football — SPORTS, Page B1 Concert Association announces season — ARTS & LEISURE, Page C1 Rain — Page A8
