explains how to raise ginseng in wooded areas to a group of interested ers and foresters By PAMELA RIGAUX Staff Ginseng a forest-grown crop coveted by the Chinese is green gold to area landowners Like gold digging in the Wild West dealers say trading ginseng in the Far East has a good a bad and an ugly side The business has some said Alice McCormick who runs the Ancient Healing Arts Center in Frederick where clients sometimes use ginseng The Chinese she said believe ginseng will extend the aging process and build the body's energy in a deep and they will pay as much as for one root The price tempted one dealer to sell a mustard plant root instead of ginseng she said He made lions There is so much fraud involved some buyers say they never know what they are getting short of going to the farms and watching the ginseng get Ms McCormick said Taxes have squeezed the ity of the dealers into the black market said Steve Galloway a Frederick County grower who has invested hundreds of hours in ducing ginseng that he speculates will be worth a pound when it is 10 years old His ginseng cultivated in raised beds will be ready to export in the year 2007 at a potential per acre and that is a tive he said Everyone thinks like that when they start out but it's not said Jim Fazenbaker of Hagerstown who dug wild ginseng as a boy with his uncles and father I deal mostly with wild seng I buy it from diggers who might only have half a pound a pound a he said They find it in the Appalachian mountains in counties west of Fredenck ing Allegany Garrett and Washington Dealers say that ginseng grown in the wild with no cultivation whatsoever brings the most money Mr Fazenbaker said a pound last year sold for but dropped this year to and the type that Mr Galloway grows would be about half that The peak price this year was so is good said Mr Galloway adding that the diggers Continued on Page 5 r Our Guide Buffalo Wings and Beer an exceptional treat Buffalo Wings and Beer Restaurant Bar and Billiards 5 Willowdale Drive Willowdale Plaza Frederick Seven days a week to 11 p.m Handicapped accessible have often said it would be easy for me to become a vegetarian if there weren't buffalo chicken wings and barbecued ribs A recent visit to Buffalo Wings and Beer aka BWB reaffirmed my feeling that I shouldn't go buying stock in tofu and anytime soon The new restaurant in Willowdale Plaza next to the Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre can safely boast some of the best licking wings in the area The restaurant is the fourth franchise in the Washington area There is one in the Horizon Center in Gaithersburg another in the Plaza del Mercado in Silver Spring and a third in Cleverly in Silver Spring The Frederick location is separated into two rooms A small dining room with a bar greet guests on the left half Booths line the walls and three tables run the middle of the floor In all four corners a television set decorates the spot where the wall meets the ceiling You could find golf on one station tennis on another and college basketball on the other two Visit BWB on a weekend and this time of year football will be blaring from all four Same for the sets in the other room Yet you won't be able to sit down here Five pool tables with green shaded lamps illuminating their green felt py the space on the right half of BWB Several dart boards take up permanent residence in the back corner Yes BWB bills itself as a sports bar Yet this should not intimidate the non- sports wing fanatic from visiting Just remember if you wear team colors on the weekend be prepared to be true to your so to speak And on week days the atmosphere is 180 degrees No ries about screaming fans and vociferous supporters The afternoon lunch mood is quiet and relaxing And the service is quick and friendly At lunch with a co-worker recently I stifled my anticipation of sinking my teeth into a fat juicy wing having been pointed with offerings from several other well-established local restaurants Gazing over the menu my attitude slowly started to warm up as I read down over the choices of sauces There were over a dozen in all with an added bonus of being able to tailor coat your wings with a combination of any two sauces And with names like Chick for mild sauce Rooster for hot Super Cock for extra- extra hot and Insane Cock for aging hot it was obvious the owners were having fun running the hen house Add to those flavors honey mustard teriyaki BWB Bay Cajun garlic and of course naked and the combination possibilities are endless BWB lets you mix and match any two sauces to create your own tom wing covering I decided to go with two pounds of wings slathered with a combination of sauce extra hot and Cajun sauce Wings here are sold by the pound not by the wing A pound of wings with a single sauce will run you Combine two sauces and add a lar to the price Two pounds of wings which makes a health meal for one or a good appetizer for two costs Ten pounds of wings costs The mandatory side of celery sticks can be served with blue cheese or ranch dressing Score points here for the big chucks of blue cheese in the dressing The wings were nothing short of heaven There were no greasy puddles on the plate and the sauce stuck fast to each wing and leg The pieces were thick and flavorful My sauce combination was spicy but not to the point I needed a pitcher of water to quench the fire No throat burning here Instead it made me want more wings It was the kind of spicy that slapped your tongue around and pinched your lips making them tingle Mine were tingling for a good half-hour after finishing That was a very good sign indeed Score another point or two for the waitress offering up a good reserve of kins for wiping sticky fingers Continued
