Maryland 21705 Friday November 17 2000 com Lament Photo courtesy ACC Maryland senior running back LaMont Jordan who was hyped as a preseason Trophy will likely play his last game on Saturday versus No 20 Georgia Tech He has scored 11 touchdowns for the Terps but his rushing yardage has dropped significantly from last season By JOHN CANNON Staff COLLEGE PARK Maryland running back LaMont Jordan has logged his share of time in the weight room preparing for that next game But this time was different Jordan realized that Saturday's game against No 20 Georgia Tech would be his last chance to play at Byrd Stadium and it could be the senior's final collegiate game I was in the weight room And then I looked out on the field and thought This is Jordan said As far as the regular season goes this is it A Terps win on Saturday would give Jordan that bowl bid he's been longing for since coming to Maryland in 1997 but a loss would end his illustrious career Either way Jordan's days as a Maryland football player are numbered It's going to be emotional for me but everything has to come to an Jordan said The way the future will turn out you don't know I was thinking what I could have done differently so many ent things Jordan's record-setting ability has put him in the limelight since his sophomore year But coming into his senior season Jordan drew attention for missing spring tice and fall camp to become mically eligible I definitely would have liked to have avoided the negative Jordan said Of course it was a learning experience that pre- pares you for real life Jordan was glad he was at Maryland during such trying times I went through everything in college where you have a support Jordan said In the real world you don't have that I'm glad I went through hard times I feel it's made me a better person Jordan had some tough times on the field earlier this season Jordan was hyped as a Heisman Trophy candidate but those hopes were all but dashed as the tailback got off to a slow start running behind Maryland's shaky offensive line It's hard to live up to that hype and when teams concentrate on you so Jordan said I enjoyed it while it lasted I would have liked to have been in the Heisman race past the first week Jordan has 11 touchdowns this season but his 895 rushing yards are well short of the he gamed last year Jordan's monster 1999 season generated talk that he might forego his senior year for the NFL draft but Jordan doesn't regret staying at Maryland Continued on Page 4 Our Guide to Dining I CF Fine French dining comes to Lovettsville La Fleur De Lis 2 S Church St Lovettsville Va Va 287 Reservations recommended Limited handicapped accessibility Major credit cards accepted Catering available 5 to 9 p.m 5 to 10 p.m Sunday brunch 11 p.m Sunday dinner 4 to 9 p.m This tiny restaurant two miles south of Brunswick tantalized my tastebuds as soon as I learned of it Having been a fan of French cooking since a brief visit there many years ago I was eager to try this Americanized version My anticipation was not in vain La Fleur De Lis is housed in what was a popular Italian restaurant that moved to larger quarters in Purcellville Va about 10 years ago For a short while earlier this year the new restaurant was called Joe's after William J Walden The name was changed to reflect the restaurant's emphasis on French food and fine dining My delight with the change continued upon my arrival La Fleur De Lis is in a two-story brick building that is set off by cle lights around the exterior The rant which is non-smoking is on the ond floor and the bar is downstairs along with tables for smokers My guest and I entered through heavy oaken doors Inside the dining room has about a dozen tables all sheathed in elegant white tablecloths accompanied by peach-colored cloth kins On the walls were colorful French posters from the Art Deco era Oak floors and trim gave the feeling that we were in a country French restaurant as opposed to a modern Parisian bistro We were offered our choice of tap water or mineral water along with our beverage The menu choices reflected a mix of local and international ingredients all prepared in a style that reflected the French love for sauces and unusual combinations We were served water and iced tea very quickly The staff at La Fleur De Lis is very friendly and our waiter was assisted by several others who brought us more water and iced tea throughout the meal and who cleared our plates promptly We each started with appetizers My guest ordered the house cured dill salmon with chives caviar and vodka creme fraiche This dish was probably the highlight of the entire meal The salmon was poached to perfection and the sauce seemed the perfect accompaniment out overpowering the fresh salmon flavor The red caviar which was delicately vored provided a nice backdrop for the dish I ordered the appetizer special gus with hollandaise sauce 50 The asparagus was very fresh and the landaise was the best I've ever tasted I tried to soak up as much of the sauce as possible with each bite of asparagus Other appetizer choices include shrimp cocktail escargots in a champagne sauce and fresh duck foie gras terrine with toast points and cornichons My guest also ordered the soup du joir a potato leek soup which he described as salty but good I had the house salad fresh organic greens in a house vinaigrette with garlic croutons 25 The vinaigrette was very good but what stood out was the garlicky crouton We were also served a loaf of warm French bread and this bread had the crusty exterior with a soft white rior It was very good but I had to resist the urge to eat several pieces because I wanted to save room for my entree Entree es are varied without being too extensive Rack of lamb is served in a garlic parsley crust Atlantic salmon is with sauteed vegetables and chive butter A ounce filet mignon is with roasted potatoes fried leeks and bernaise sauce An Alsatian specialty is braised sauerkraut in white wine with sausages roast duck and pheasant Long Island duck is sewed wth a Grand Marnier sauce Then there is Chateaubriand for two fresh live Maine lobster swordfish New York strip steak and the vegetarian selection of the day Prices range from 95 to except for the lamb which is The lobster is market price and the vegetarian dish price varies The Chateaubriand for two is I liked the way the menu emphasized dishes popular with American palates and gave them a French twist I chose the stuffed Shenandoah trout with jumbo crabmeat baked with white wine and served with toasted almonds and lemon butter The sauce that Continued on Page 2 What's Going On in the Frederick Area Rescue Mission Thanksgiving Dinner The Frederick Rescue Bread of Life Community Kitchen
