performs a lymphatic massage on clients being treated for SAD This type of massage aids in removing metabolic waste through the body to mote rapid recovery of illnesses Massage is part of the treatment available at Natural and Acupuncture Clinic in Frederick By KAREN GARDNER Assistant Family Editor For years it was just known as the winter blues Now like many disorders it has a more scientific name Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD is very much the winter blues It sets in in winter and is caused by lack of sunlight The Natural Medicine and Acupuncture Clinic in Frederick has a ment ly tailored to SAD SAD usually starts to affect people when the days begin to shorten in October and becomes noticeable in January and February Not only are the days shorter but cold snowy weather means people are less likely to want to spend time outside Natural light even on Feeling depressed excessive sleeping and eating and mood swings are typical signs of SAD cloudy overcast days is the best treatment But for those whose work schedules prevent them from getting outside ing daylight hours spectrum lights may fill the void At the Natural Medicine Clinic at 6 W Third St in Frederick the fluorescent lights have been ed in favor of spectrum lights The brightly lighted rooms allow clients to absorb light while under- going a sage or acupuncture Massage therapist Ed Rossi will often do a lymphatic massage on clients being treated for SAD This is different from a typical body massage Clients do not remove their clothes and slip under a sheet for a lymphatic massage Instead they lie on Continued on Page 3 Service variety specialties at Rick's Rick's Chinatown Chinese Restaurant 190 Thomas Johnson Drive Frederick Phone Fax p.m JO p.m Sunday noon 9 p.m 7 Major credit cards accepted carry-out banquet facilities to the handicapped If you are looking for a restaurant that caters to all ages and all degrees of Chinese food fans Rick's Chinatown Chinese Restaurant is a great choice My mother and I along with my one- year-old daughter Catherine visited the restaurant on a recent Saturday arriving just after the establishment opened for lunch We were warmly greeted and offered a high chair the sign of a good restaurant for some My mother works for a group of Chinese doctors just across the street meaning Rick's is a great place to go for a quick bite if you work in or visit a doctor's office in the and highly ed Rick's as she had been once before She shared that one of the doctor's sons described Rick's as American which I interpreted as meaning the food is somewhat Americanized but is also authentic enough to be endorsed by those who prefer true Chinese cooking Rick's is one of the most ed restaurants I have been in for some time even though their specialty is the buffet The were always in sight to accommodate our needs and also remained close to the buffet in order to keep it well-stocked They also talked and played with Catherine stooping to pick up dropped toys The decor was bright done mostly in and yellow and the dows large and open leading to an able dining experience The tables were a faux marble green The selection of food on the buffet itself was quite a sight to behold so we both decided to forgo the menu We were not alone as many of the diners who soon filled the room also chose the buffet From Monday to Saturday the lunch buffet is for adults and for dren under 10 From Monday to Thursday the dinner buffet is for adults and for children under 10 The Sunday buffet is for adults and for kids There is also a seafood buffet on ends A variety of main dishes was displayed on the buffet as well as side dishes soups and sweet treats Each dish was labeled over the buffet a boon for the Chinese and everything was kept at a good temperature There was also another cold food bar with fresh fruits such as orange wedges and cantaloupe steamed though not spiced shrimp and sushi Plain rice and fried rice were available in large vats that kept both warm though my mother commented that the plain rice stuck together a bit The fried rice was good and not too strongly flavored Two soups were featured that day hot and sour as well as chicken with velvet corn soup but neither of us tried them Some of the dishes we had included fried and barbecued chicken beef and broccoli tomato beef dumplings with sauce sweet rolls chicken and rice dles sweet and sour chicken General chicken crab rangoon fried shrimp egg rolls and green beans We both agreed that we liked everything we tried and nothing was too strongly flavored My lunch partner said she liked the fet because it allowed one who is not familiar with Chinese foods to try a little of everything She also thought the fried and barbecued chicken seemed to be fairly which would satisfy anyone who may not like Chinese Catherine enjoyed Jell-O from the cold bar some rice arid the sweet rolls The restaurant does close the buffet during certain hours so if you are inter- ested in you may want to call ahead In addition to the buffet there is also an extensive menu that offers a wide variety of dishes at reasonable prices Appetizers range from an egg or spring roll at to a pao pao platter for two at Various chicken pork and beef es are mostly around Most of the seafood dishes are about Low-cal and vegetarian meals are available and chow mein chop suey and fried rice are available by the pint or quart Lunch are served daily with the soup of the day an egg roll and fried rice for around The restaurant also has a small kids menu with shrimp tempura or chicken wings Continued on Page 4 What's Going On in the Frederick Area Get Hooked on Seafood The Maryland Cooperative Extension of Frederick County Family and
