teers assisting with data gathering for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine's database By KAREN GARDNER Assistant Family Editor Diaries letters and journal articles fill two filing cabinet drawers at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine waiting to be condensed into quick information These documents will add to the museum's cache of historical information available to researchers filling in names regiments tals battle locations and other pertinent mation Someone will be able to type in a name and a database will come up with every source that con- tains that said Terry Reimer director of public relations and research coordinator for the museum The museum has 20 volunteers who will review the 400 to 500 documents and record important sections of those for the database Some of the documents seem pretty routine For instance one article lists the types of uni- forms various soldiers wore Altogether er the information will help to paint a picture of the Civil War and its complex medical history A photocopy of a letter from a hospitalized soldier named Cockrill said Dear Sallie For the third time I write to you without ing one line am sick and hardly able to only I had a little box of something from home The letter was written in Louisville Ky and dated 1862 Overall handwriting was good and his spelling was very good except for the word wright Sometimes you'll run into some that are phonetic and those are very hard to Ms Reimer said Handwritten letters are usually not as difficult to read as many handwritten items of today she said There were a number of illiterate people but the people who could write could write she said They knew how to turn a phrase Most of the letters the museum has are of originals which is what museum officials want Photocopies help add to the museum's research bank while allowing ers to retain the original copies Often the ters have been handed down through the and people are reluctant to give them up By providing the museum with photocopies however the information is preserved and available to all researchers Fortunately for the museum bureaucracy was as prevalent during the Civil War as it is today There were official discharge forms forms filled out when a patient was admitted to a hospital forms filled out each month so diers could get paid forms filled out when a patient died The musuem has copies of dis- charge forms including one in which a man's name is spelled three different ways on the form and a fourth in a board pictured with the photo One original document in the museum's archives that volunteers will need to record involves a list of questions for medical students from 1858 One question was How are nitrates distinguished from other while another was Name the diseases of the skin Some of the documents are much more recent Articles in medical scientific or cal journals or magazines specializing in the Continued on Page 2 Raw Bar beckons seafood music lovers Bentz Street Raw Bar 6 S Bentz St Frederick Web 11 to 2 Visa MasterCard American Express Handicapped accessible Like the sultry siren she is the mermaid calls Etched on the plate glass at the Bentz Street Raw Bar she beckons to seafood lovers Come in come in And they do for the fresh and expertly prepared shrimp clams mussels oysters lobster hard and soft shell crab oysters and fish raw as in sushi and in filets as in swordfish der and tuna If you like it cooked you can get it baked steamed or grilled here The seafood is as good as you can get in the restaurants by the docks in Ocean City although the closest the Raw Bar gets to water is the nearby Carroll Creek Owner Rick Ehardt opened the Raw Bar in 1986 in the tiny little niche known for years and years as The Blue Bird Restaurant He concentrated on the bar a complete full-service restaurant with beer wine and liquor Next door was the City Auto Radiator Works in business since 1926 With an eye for expansion Ehardt took over the garage room around 10 years ago and began ing well-known jazz musicians that draw the crowds on weekends The atmosphere is casual and funky Ehardt wisely flavors his establishment with years of what came before The floors in the garage are concrete and the original brick walls are decorated with neon signs The expansive garage room seats about 125 easily Picnic tables covered in brown paper bring on the steamed crabs and matched plastic patio furniture reinforce the ambiance The large garage door makes up the entire wall fronting Bentz Street A bar area is off to one side and the stage to the rear definitely takes prominence in this room As you enter the Raw Bar from the street parking here always seems to be iffy but we found a place on the street right by the door you first enter the smaller dining and bar area Here glossy wood tables high enough for bar stools line the one side of the narrow area The bar nates the other side There is just space to walk through Veer left and you are in the cavernous comparison garage room Keep going straight and you come to the bathrooms a pool table area aind another larger room to the rear On the Saturday night my husband and I visited the Raw Bar we sat in the garage room which can be a bit chilly on a cold ter night I'm sure once the band starts playing the place heats up quite a bit We arrived a little after 7 p.m and were surprised to find very few people in the place In the absence of a hostess or ress we wandered through and sat at one of the round plastic white tables and waited Being a casual place it was hard to tell who was working and who was a regular We sat there wondering for a minute until the bartender brought us menus and asked for our drink orders The restaurant's website features a complete menu with descriptions and prices a listing of the music for the month a page of photos of patrons enjoying the Raw Bar a sushi site and links to the Scott Ambush Group and Whop Frazier Friends By Choice Apropos for a bar the menu starts with munchies like baskets of chips pretzels peanuts chips and salsa nachos white pizza and a cheese plate Prices range from around up to Appetizer prices begin around and top out at more than for the combination of oysters Rockefeller clams casino and stuffed mushroom caps I was seriously considering ordering this trio of tasty items but decided to share the hot crab dip with my band passing also on the smoked blue fish and the shrimp cocktail My husband had been hoping for a bowl of cream of crab which was on the website menu However this Maryland delicacy was not on the menu in hand You could order seafood chowder or Maryland crab by the cup starting around or by the bowl more than The Raw Bar which opens for lunch at 11 also offers chili an assortment of sandwiches prices range from for a hot dog to about for a crab cake and a variety of salads like seafood tuna chicken supreme and Caesar With dinner served from 5 to 10 p.m you get a garden salad a choice of starch and vegetable of the day Although the website menu says you get a roll and butter we didn't Knowing what we wanted I ordered the crab cakes and my husband the stuffed flounder both with the baked potato Other specialties of the house include seafood Norfolk scallop scampi shrimp swordfish or tuna filet lobster surf and turf baby back ribs New York strip steak and Continued on Page 3 What's Going On
