By KAREN GARDNER Assistant Entertainment Editor LUCKETTS Va The old schoolhouse stage seemed as familiar as a front porch and the music that emanated from it is the land of music that has been played on the front porches of Appalachia for decades It's this folksy homey setting that attracts crowds of anywhere from 100 to 250 people to the Lucketts Community Center's weekly bluegrass concerts a Saturday night staple m this tiny community four miles south of Point of Rocks A band of volunteers with a bit of assistance from the community center staff puts together a line-up of concerts from October to the end of April that includes some of the biggest names in bluegrass music along with some with regional This Saturday's show features John Donaldson Low Profile along with Dean Sapp Harford Express Next week on Feb 13 the acclaimed band Tyme Out will play two shows and organizers are expecting a sellout crowd This is all there said Don Obert manager of the Center during a tour of the center before the show last Saturday night This little stage is where they perform and we're down to one spotlight The audience sits on folding chairs that can get a bit hard by the intermission The shows are in the back of the schoolhouse which now serves as a community meeting house and hosts many local recreational activities including the Lucketts Fair in August The building was built in 1913 and closed as a school in 1972 It is now on the National Register of Historic Places Occupying former classrooms in the front are rooms for each of the bands to rehearse sell tapes and CDs and souvenirs a snack bar and a large hallway where Barbara Slaughter veils tickets Barbara and Gene Slaughter of nearby Lovettsville took over the organization of Lucketts Bluegrass in 1979 from E J Spence who founded it in 1974 They booked the bands sold the tickets and ed the sound system until last year when Frank Jurney began doing the bookings Mrs Slaughter still sells the tickets and her husband is hi charge of the sound system He's assisted by Paul Hope Jr of Lucketts and Lewis Story of Alexandria Va The Slaughters began coming to Lucketts when their daughter Linda played banjo at Their ter has another life now but the Slaughters stayed with the bluegrass shows A lot of people say this is the Mrs Slaughter said That's not the case among Above members of the Fastest Grass Alive began assisting Ms Tillet in the kitchen She doesn't come every week but when she can and looks for- ward to hearing the music Band members like the venue because it varies from the typical bar or
