Technology Center on Monday By DOUGLAS TALLMAN Staff A job skills competition Monday gave students a chance to show their mastery at masonry their command of cosmetology and their adroit auto body repair About 250 students at the Career and Technology Center participated in the Skills USA Championships seeking the chance to represent the county at regional state and national competitions Business representatives judged the students work in 19 areas It was organized by the school's Vocational Industrial Clubs of America chapter Frank Taylor a teacher said the contest had several benefits It allows industry to come in and critique the he said The students learn from the expertise of adults in the field And the judges get a chance to learn about the programs going on at the center and provide feedback about their needs he said The Olympics also provides recognition for student accomplishments It really captivates their interests It's another tool to get them to Mr Taylor said The contests required the students to put to work skills they'll put to work when they get jobs For example the computer-aided contest required students to draw construction diagrams based on a sketch and tions exactly what they would do at an architectural firm teacher Clyde LaBrush said In the electronics competition students had to assemble a gizmo with red blinking lights and a timer circuit The job required soldering skills and component identification said George Brake electronics teacher at the center The contest had another big dose of the real world said Dr Dave Prophet the electronics professor at Frederick Community College It puts them in an environment where they have to complete thing in a given amount of and it has to he said The graphic arts competition tested students skills at desktop ing darkroom work and printing All the tests would be skills they would use on the job graphic arts teacher John Augustine said There might be higher tech equipment in business because they have the money but the foundation is the Mr Augustine said In the auto body competition students had to punch out a dent mix paint and write an estimate Teacher Frank Damazo area Stained Glass classes The City of Frederick Recreation Department offers Stained Glass Classes for beginners and the more Two beginner classes are scheduled this winter with one starting on Jan 20 and the other on March 3 Each session lasts for five weeks and costs for for non city residents all materials are included in the cost Independent studies classes are offered for those with more experience who would like to work on their own ject These classes meet on Tuesdays and cost non city for four sessions Participants are responsible for their own materials but can use equipment at the ter A stained glass lamp shade class is scheduled to begin on Jan 21 and will run for eight weeks The cost for this class is for for non city and does not include materials for the basic panel lamp
