21 Maryland 21705 July 1998 Girl dances on wheels By KAREN GARDNER Assistant Entertainment Editor Kaitlyn Andree is and has wanted to take dance classes for several years Last she got her For it wasn't just a matter of signing up for class Kaitlyn was born with spina bifida and is confined to a chair That doesn't stop her from ing with the rhythms of music She and Kimberly director of Mid Maryland Performing Arts swayed to the music of an Italian folk called a Staff photo by Sam Yu Kaitlyn Andree of Thurmont strikes a dance pose with Kimberly director of the Mid Maryland Performing Aits Centre and recently at the ter Kaitlyn seems undaunted by the challenges of spina da tella In her Kaitlyn twirled and swung her arms to the and Ms DiFranco danced around her The two had just returned from a weeklong shop in Cleveland with the Cleveland Ballet's Dancing Wheels The dance company uses dancers and able-bodied dancers in ballet tines use their Ms DiFranco said may have a stand-up dancer and a sit-down and they partner each Using the dancers twirl and flip their doing wheelies and other eye-catching movements something I've always wanted to said Ms DiFranco At she has heat with spicy menu La Paz Mexican Restaurant 18 N Market Frederick Monday through 11 to 10 11 to 11 noon to 11 4 to 10 p.m Accessible to the handicapped The summer season is a hot but the weather can't match some of the hot seasonings at La Paz A short stroll from North Market Street and tucked behind the East Church Street parking garage is a piece of Frederick city tradition Frederick County's heritage may be but La Paz may make you think we may have some relatives south of the border The two-level restaurant is deceptively large and apparently a favorite spot for the downtown lunch crowd Decorated with a Mexican adobe diners seat themselves in the downstairs dining area that seats about 50 The Tuesday after- noon lunch crowd filled the room on the day my guest and I but there a wait Rumor has it we may have been as the popular spot can fill up for lunch While the room is inviting with colorful napkins on each wooden it may be difficult for a handicapped person to maneuver around the tables positioned fairly close together The close proximity to other diners also makes La Paz not the spot for an romantic dining experience or where workers should air their office dirty laundry It is the for good food and a good time with friends and ers Although there is not a special lunch La Paz does offer daily specials On the day my co-worker and I visited for diners could enjoy a blackened dock soft taco with marinated lettuce and cheese with rice and all for Making the most of our my worker and I ordered a small chile con queso appetizer for even though La Paz has a reputation of not being shy on their portions Other options were flour tortillas filled with melted for or potato skins topped with cheese and jalapeno peppers for All diners get a basket full of crunchy tortilla chips and homemade salsa The one is spicy and chunky The chile con queso was served warm and much milder than the complimentary salsa My co-worker said she detected a slight pimento flavor Before taking on a main diners can also tackle a salad or soup Salads available include avocado and tomato salad for a Mexican boat salad your choice of beef or chicken served with sour cream and black olives in a tortilla for and Ensalada de Nopalitos pear tus tomato and onion with oil and vinegar for Soups include chili a chicken tortilla a and gazpacho a The main menu has much to offer for both the experienced Mexican food eater and the less adventurous My co-worker chose the Shrimp La Paz for Six shrimp were served heavily battered and deep fried in a homemade mix of spices and breading It was served with rice and a La Paz salad piled high with cheese The shrimp were huge and in keeping with La Paz the meal more than filled the plate The entire meal was served steaming hot and the batter was spicy enough to clear out a minor sinus infection I ordered from the combination dinner option At La Paz diners can mix and match traditional Mexican foods The combo meals are served with Mexican rice and pinto beans I chose the combo of a chicken lada soft corn tortilla served topped with enchilada and a bean and cheese burrito flour tortilla wrapped around a filling and smothered in chile for Both were very cheesy and delicious The pulled chicken was tasty and fresh The rice and beans also left a taste of spice on the tongue Lunch as La Paz can even be less expensive and less filling Many diners opt for a lighter meal from the a la carte tion of the menu that assures that you get only what you can eat On that menu are tacos for burritos for up to and enchiladas for Toppings such as sour cream and lettuce are all extra Other diners include fajitas stirfry of beef or chicken and Continued on Page 2 What's Going On in the Frederick Area YMCA Child Care programs
