Fort Wayne Evening Post (Newspaper) - June 26, 1896, Fort Wayne, Indiana FORT WAYNE EVENING POST VOL NO 339 FRIDAY EVENING JUNE 26 1896 SIX CENTS A GM AND gold standard had got off the r publican platform adopted at Si Lou which pledges the party to get rid o the gold standard by agreement to free silver He the belief that if the tea ca ried the country this fall there will be Split session of congress Mr Mason's second speech 1 put the following question to Brya Why will you insist on coining all tl silver of the world when there is not nation in the world that will open i to the unlimited coinage o American To this Bryan an If the free coinage of Ge man and English silver is good for ou people I want it for our people er Germany and England will do wha is good for their people or not We ar not coining German silver for Germa people we are coining it for our ow people The mention of McKinley's name b Mason was the occasion of it tremen dous outburst of applause The Oh map also stirred up enthusiasm for Boies by the country has to stand the of a free-silver president there is non whom I would rather see in the plac than the distinguished Valparaiso and Chicago commencing May 24 one fare for the round trip Tickets good returning on the date of sale la June W F Mason of Chicago and W J Bryan o Nebraska met Jo joint debate on the silver question at the opening of th i Chautauqua here Governor Boies pre sided on the part of the am introduced Mr Bryan The governor appearance oit the platform was th for of the wild eat applause His address of introduc tion was brief He only said that h considered the question of whit be the future financial policy of our na tion the foremost one before the people Mr Bryan took the free-silver side o the question and opened the debate He said it was the almost universal claim of the goldbugs that financiers and capitalists are alone competent to express opinions on the great monetary question He Mr Mason if in his judgment this were true and if it were true what was the use to of the matter to In the Interests of the People Mr Bryan argued at a man ought to look at the monr question from the standpoint of his 1 interest just aa protectionists ask him to look at the tariff question He I believe bimetallism is for the best interests of the great mass of the people and I am confident that if they understand the subject they will vote for their own in- He declared that Mr Mason would not and dare not defend the standard as the best thing for the country and argued that the use ol the two metals made money less changeable aud less fluctuating He described an honest dollar as one that would neither rise nor fall he the gold decreases and sometimes the silver but seldom both together Hence the advantage of bimetallism Arguing that the debtor and creditor stand equal as to their rights in choosing the money of payment he presented the theory that it would-be better for society to give the option to the debtor the result being an inclination of the two metals toward each other He If the creditor has an option he will desire the dearer and if all the creditors desire the dearer metal they increase the demand for that metal and it becomes dearer and the cheaper metal becomes cheaper of Republican Victory After Mr Bryan had talked 80 minutes Mason was introduced by Judge Tolerton He started out by declaring that his stale of Illinois would indorse the honest single gold standard next November by majority and I am in favor of the single gold standard anti am here to defend it In reply to Mr question he My honorable opponent asks State whether the capitalist and bankers are the only persons competent to express an opinion on this question I answer no The democratic district in Illinois known as the Eighteenth submitted the question whether we should have a dollar or a dollar dollar It was a democratic district and the issue was as drawn as any was ever drawn in any campaign and we submitted it to the farmer to the mechanic to the blacksmith and to the merchant and we wiped out democracy and free silver in that district and will do it again Defining an Honest Dollar Defining an honest dollar and holding In his hand a silver dollar he I say it is an honest dollar because it will buy all it calls for in any nation of the world but if the government of the United States had not stamped it it would be worth but 53 cents anywhere in the world Here is this Mexican dollar with more silver than ours but 47 cents promise and 53 cents performance Is it an honest No This dollar from Mexico with more silver in it than ours is worth more than ours intrinsically but because they have flooded their country with unlimited coinage of silver they have reduced It si that this little piece of silver with tlie American eagle on It will go anywhere in the world and buy two Mexican dollars It can say I am not worth anything intrinsically but financially I can say I know that my redeemer liveth Mr Mason declared that it is not right to appeal to the people promising them an opportunity to pay their debts with dollars and snld there had been no free-silver talk during the republican administration He declared that the democratic administration had impoverished the government at the rate of a day and that it was circulation of the currency not inflation that was needed the Party Platform When Mr Bryan took the platform the second time he declared that Mr Mason by taking a stand in defense June 20 Efforts ar being made already to overthrow th ood work of the Indiana democrats Phe news of what they had done in re gard to free silver was not an hour ol in New York before communication be tween Walt street and the Hoosier win of the began What Bynum and his associates toll their friends in the east can only be in erred from a telegram or two tha reached influential here sug vesting a compromise at Chicago o the new platform One of these tele prams was to Col R C Bell who pre sided over the great democratic con vention He was Will the Saratoga platform be ac to the Indiana a That direct question came from the Jew York World Colonel could have replied immediately but lie wish ed to talk with Governor Matthews rel to what form of an answer shouli be made The governor like the col net could have answered No a nee but the two wished to make ihei reply as concise but as Emphatic us Possible Allen W Clark of the State Silver League was with them and from th of the three a reply to thi was sent There are no factions among Indiana f There can be no mise with gold standard men unless i s upon the Indiana platform We be ieve that is broud enough aud strong for all democrats of the countr o stand on The governor was in good cheer to ay over the results of the convention fast to having certain persona riends on the national delegation meii f gold and he got two of them but nother goldite went with them Of he third Matthews knew nothing It as Lautman of Lake county That vas an unexpected election and it was mely for it served as a for he Loss of 11 ugh Dougherty The governor felt he had won a and could afford to be gracious to he silver men with whom he had not on pleasant relations for a week the convention The silver men too were in high feather Many the leaders did not go home until They spent the day congratulations from A week the silver managers ere being abused but today nothing n earth was too good for them The times are more said Hen W Clark the young editor at to whom much of the of free silver in this state is ue am on better terms with the When I went to his office his morning with Colonel Bell I to be coldly received but he as very kind I have not been as as some of the Silver League as to methods but I was as utter any of them on the proposition of laving a national delegation of Thirty Silver Men or that reason I did all I could to for But ie governor is of a forgiving nature so relations are once more between him and the silver en Mr Clark asked if the movement have a state committee of increased would be pushed Not with my he replied have faith in the gold men on the gular state committee and although ey are in the I believe ery man of them will be loyal to the and the ticket What we must do now is to forget our und work as a unit for silver league committee I link will do nothing more us an unless an emergency arises e will not but we will hold No More Meetings I the members will keep in uch and if anything should occur lling for our attention we can immediately But I believe we will have to do is to the use individually in our home counties aving the general management of the rty to the state committee The majority of the Silver League not inclined to do that it I am certain council 11 prevail Slate Chairman Holt he would ail he could to elect the ticket and ayor Tuggart remarked that while differed from the majority
