UPI The Equal Rights Amendment narrowly approved in the House faces another uphill battle this week in the Senate and proponents of the ERA are ning an all-out campaign to swing at least five senators to their side ERA supporters begin their vigorous week of campaigning day with a parade with such prominent feminists as author Betty Friedan and National Organization for Women dent Karen DeCrow in its first massive show of strength Gov Reubin Askew was to greet the marchers on the steps at noon The ERA which prohibits governmental discrimination on the basis of sex was narrowly proved by a vote in the House last Thursday night Both sides say the Senate vote ex- late this week will be even closer than the House vote even though forces hold a potentially killing edge in committee The ERA has said they conclud- ed Michael and Mrs Carmichael were the same person after ing with Michael's family FBI agents finally traced the Michaels to a northwest Dade County home and staked it out until they apprehended Michael last day Agents said Michael may prefer to be a woman but as far as we know it is all in the mind I would have preferred to be in the women's section of the Michael said I consider myself a woman but I'm sort of an in-between CHIEF AREA DEL RIO Tex UPI Del Rio located on the Mexican border is the state's chief sheep lamb and wool producing area 34 slates and needs approval of four more to become the amendment of the Constitution In past ratification battles 21 senators have voted against the ERA and 16 have voted for it Thus proponents of the ERA need to keep all 16 of those senators who have voted for the amendment plus pick up all three formally undecided votes and woo away two of the 21 votes On the other side the Stop ERA ladies need only to hold onto the votes they recruited the past two years The ERA previously failed 54 in the House during the 1973 session and died in the Senate 19 last year Senate rules committee man Lew Brantley D- Jacksonville has no qualms about stifling the ERA off the floor but if that doesn't happen he is willing to kill the ratifying resolution wherever he finds it If no senator on the rules committee has changed his tion it would be he said But it is my feeling that there are a couple who would be willing to vote it out of com- then vote against it on the floor The rules committee is split against the ERA Senate President Dempsey J City did not refer the ERA to the judiciary committee which would be the usual committee to consider such a proposal Barron who is immovably opposed to the ERA made the move in light of a panel edge against the ment Of the 11 freshmen in the Senate six voted against the ERA when they were in the House and two voted for it Another newcomer Sen Edgar Dunn Beach has no prior legislative service but two others West Palm Beach Democrats Don Chitders and Harry Johnston are counted as undecided by the forces Democrats Guy Spicola of Tampa and Dick Renick of Miami voted for the ERA as House members The 14 current senators who voted for the ERA last year and return this session are Independent Lori Wilson of Merritt bland the Senate's only woman member Miami Democrats George Firestone Jack Gordon Bob Graham man Winn Ken Myers and Ralph Poston Jim Glisson Phil Lewis Palm Beach Henry Sayler Petersburg Dan Scarborough D- Jacksonville Alan Trask Meade John Vogt Island and Zinkel D- Hollywood The 15 veteran senators who voted against the amendment last year are Barron Brantley Childers Richard J Deeb Petersburg Tom Gallen D- Warren Henderson David Lane Lauderdale Julian Lane D- Tampa David McClain Tampa Curtis Peterson D- Lakeland Ken Plante Orlando Bob Saunders D- Gainesville Walter Sims Orlando Chester Stolzenburg Fort lauderdale and John Ware Petersburg Freshman senators who voted against the ERA as House members in 1973 are Sens non Holloway Mattox Hair Kenneth MacKay Pat Thomas Jon C Thomas Fort Lauderdale and Tom Tobiassen Dickinson Scapegoat JACKSONVILLE Fla UPI A federal judge is expected to rule today on the admissibility of tax returns which defense lawyers claim will prove former slate Comptroller Fred son was a scapegoat in an ex- scheme U.S District Judge W Terrell Hodges examined the records of Corp President E.G Banks over the weekend The proposed evidence includes Banks individual returns for the years 1969 through 1973 and the corporate returns of for the same period The defense opening its case for Dickinson Friday said Banks was the man behind the scheme to withhold bank charters from three state banks until the organizers made a portion of their stock available Mr Dickinson was merely a scapegoat in cleansing Mr Banks of the offenses he chief defense counsel Walter Ar- nold said Friday in his opening arguments Then tapping Dickinson on the shoulder Ar- nold added The only evidence against this defendant is street gossip and innuendo The defense said the returns show Banks was in a high tax bracket Resume Cuban Ties MIAMI UPI A group of about 100 Cuban exiles calling for a nonviolent solution to the tragedy which has divided have called for resumption of diplomatic relations between the United Stales and Cuba The Rev Manuel Viera one of several clergymen who is part of the Cuban Christians for Justice and Freedom said Saturday the group believes the normalization of relations is the best
