former Sen Edward Gurney began a day Easter recess today after hearing a government witness testify Thursday in direct con- tradition of an earlier ment witness Former Slate Republican ly Finance Committee Chairman George Anderson testified day hat Williams was not hired until after the Jan 19 1971 meeting at the senator's Winter Park home and that the hiring was done by either himself or former State GOP Chairman Earl M Duke Crittenden Crittenden had testified earlier that Williams was hired by Gurney in a telephone call the senator placed from his home that night He said he and son had arranged to have Williams standing by for the call Gurney the first senator to be indicted while in office in five decades is charged in the ment with having made that call from his home He has denied all along that he hired Williams or that Williams even worked for him Williams was hired after the Anderson said day under cross examination That is my recollection Either Duke or him after meeting Both Anderson and Crillenden were named as defendants in the indictment as were former Gurney aides James Groot and Joseph Baslien and former Federal Housing Administration officials Ralph and K Wayne Swiger Anderson and Crittenden had their trials severed from that of the others in a plea arrangement Crillenden pleaded guilly to a misdemeanor charge and faces six months in prison or a fine after trial Anderson's arrangement calls for all charges to be after the trial Anderson's testimony day differed from that of Crittenden on two other matters both dealing with personal bank notes McClure must decide whether to give the state a third try at prosecuting the Petroleum Marketers Association on the charge it tried to bribe Treasurer Tom O'Malley Assistant State Attorney Robert Willis agreed with lawyers for the association Thursday that an indictment charging it tried to bribe O'Malley with to keep self-service gasoline stations out of state is legally defective Pollution Rule Studied ORLANDO Fla UPI The state's Board of Pollution Con- trol has completed three days of hearings on whether it should back off on its pollution regulations but will not take a final vole on the issue until April 15 At issue is a regulation that would require generating plants to start using oil or coal of lesser sulfur content beginning July 1 Peter P the ex- director has proposed that
