President Last October Heads Agency Edward A Dewald NEW YORK Feb 5 John R Voorhis grand sachem of Tammany hall died today at his home Despite his advanced age Voorhis had continued his work as president of the city board of elections until Oct 20 of last year when he was j retired by board of estimate at his full salary of a year He made his re quest for ment on Oct the last S e j having enacted a f law permitting his retirement on lull salary for life He c e his last birthday a n n i v e on last July 27 by making a radio broad cast On that occasion his cian attributed ripe age to clean and moderate living been grand sachem of Tammany Hall for 20 years the fact the rules of thc society provide that a man in this office may not be reelected Thc braves wishing to re tain Voorhis in that position go around the rules by merely failing to elect a successor at each an election Despite his great age en unusually good health and not long ago boasted he had not had a headache for 50 years Recently however his waning strength had ne his giving less and less time to his duties as head of the board of elections and he finally came to the conclusion that it was time for him to retire Held Many Jobs Voorhis began his long public ser vice in 1873 when he was appointed excise commissioner by Mayor Have meyer of New York Other positions to which he was appointed later in cluded commissioner of police com missioner of docks and police justice In 1001 he was named a commissioner of elections for New York city and chosen president of the board He remained on the board until when he was appointed dent of buildings He was in the state service from 1911 to 1915 as state superintendent of elections having been appointed by Governor John A Dix Return ing as a member of the New York City Board nf Elections in 1918 he was again chosen chairman of the board and continued in that position thereafter Edward A Dewald Elect ed President at An Meet Edward A Dewald superintendent of the and a former city councilman was elected president of the Associated Charities at the annual meeting of the board of trustees in the city hall auditor Thursday evening He succeeds J J Bernstein who served in that capacity during the past year Mr Dewald has been a trustee of the organization since 1923 and has been an officer of it several different times Stephen E Rice a former dent was elected first vice president to succeed Mrs George Smith Mrs Ida was reelected second vice president Roy G Collier assistant cashier of thc State bank was named treasurer He succeeds Thomas Burd who served as treasurer of the Chari ties for many years Both Mr Bern stein and Mr Burd asked to be re placed in their offices Six new trustees were elected They are A L Barr Curtis W De ployed Barracks Lodger to Buy Whisky Patrolmen Frank Woods and Stanley Switter named Monday by Director Claude R Kramer as members of a vice squad were assailed Thursday evening by Adjutant Gussie of the Salvation Army for tactics used in mak ing arrests for liquor law viola tions Mrs directed her attack the officers for employing as a stool pigeon a man who stayed at the Salvation Army barracks
